What Else To Check?

OK,

On my 4A...

-Reinforced diff mounts
-New diff mount bushings
-Wire wheel splines OK
-Shock mount bolts tight
-U-Joints OK (maybe need grease but they are not locked up/stiff)

I still have a bit of a clunk in the rear. Several of them, in fact, upon take off. If you really nurse it, you won't hear it, but if you swiftly let the clutch out, you definitely hear them.

Any other ideas?

Sliding Axle splines greased?

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

1) You're not looking for locked up/stiff U-joints, but rather ones with too much rotational slop.

2) How is the backlash in the diff? My 3A (which is basically the same diff inside) had almost 1/4 turn.

3) Can you duplicate the clunk (softly) by jacking up one wheel and turning it forcefully forward and back (engine stopped, transmission in gear) ? If so, get a helper to do that while you slide under the car and watch/listen for what is happening.

4) How are your trailing arm bushings?

Check the top right rear end mount. Use a crowbar or large screwdriver to pry on it a bit, if you get some play, look for the whole mount to be loose. Several firms sale a kit to repair this, better than new in most cases.

This was reinforced. The differential was pulled and both front mounts were reinforced and painted, along with using new differential mount bushings.

I wasn't specific above when I said diff mounts were reinforced - my bad.

1) OK - great

2) There is almost no backlash, it's really good

3) I will do this - what parts would this check? Splines? U-Joints? Hub Assembly?

4) Not checked...good point!
