What do you guys think

And ladies too...
My dad looked at a 74' MGB down in FLA this past weekend. The guy is asking $2800 BO, the car runs good, a little puff of smoke comes out upon starting everytime, but it runs smooth and strong (98,000 miles on engine). It has rust bubbles all the way down the rockers and 1/4, so the replacement of that area is inevitable. There is a couple of rust spots on the hood, and trunk. Top and interior is in good shape, no tears in either, although as normal, the dash has a couple of cracks.
The water pump was replaced, along with the tires still having alot of life left in them. Is this a good price for a car of this condition? Is there anything else he should look for or ask the owner. I myself was thinking more in the $2300-$2500 range.
Anyways, thanks for your help, and keep rolling.

the rust bubbles are a cause for concern IMO... I'm worried about what you might find lurking behind the bubbles... Not sure how much work it'll turn into. Personally, I think 2K might be my limit on something in that condition.

Did your dad "magnet test" the car at all?

I dont think he used a magnet, but he knows alot about cars, mainly mustangs, so I assume he knows wether it had bondo or not by looking at it up and down. We figured the rocker panels needed to be replaced no matter what. He has the equipment to do it himself, so is it worth the agravation to buy this one as close to $2000 as he can get it, or to find one without the rusty rockers and sills for under $3000 if he can find one.

Florida = salt = rust

you're looking at lots more than you can see....remember: MG's rust from the inside out....I wouldn't pay anywhere near that fror a rusty car that needs (at the least) valve stem seals

First "Florida" car I ever saw with a "rust problem" was a '68 Camaro... in about 1971, over on the Satellite side. It was a literal "Iron Lace" example, nearly a "See Through". I thought PA road salt was bad 'til I saw that. I've a photo somewhere in the "archives."

I was always inclined to pay for a solid body and maybe compromise on the mechanical end of it. For me, fixing, replaceing and repairing mechanical problems are far easier to do than fixing rust, just my thought. Goodluck. Mack

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif...I hate working with rust

Me three, but looks like I am going to have to replace the skin, both sides of the A posts, just the bottom on passanger side but almost to the windsheld bolts on the drivers side.

I bet it is going to be a pain finding someone to take that job on, the body shops here are not really. They just mostly do modern collusion work which is a whole different ball game.
