What condition XKE will $16k buy today?

With a budget of $16k, looking for a project XKE, what am I likely to find - if anything? I'm having a hard time getting a feel for prices of XKEs ... they seem to be all over the map, with the sky the limit. Perhaps there is simply nothing worth buying at the $16k price point? (And would you want to sell your XKE project for such a price?!)

I'd be grateful for advice, thoughts or opinions.

Thanks!

JUST thought about you a day or so ago.

As for the E-Type, they are all over the board. I'd say start trollin' around local sportscar clubs. Be patient, and for $16K you may find one but it'll likely be a project. And then xks.com becomes your home-page.

How th' heck ARE ya?!?! :savewave:

You need to be very careful if you find one in that price range...you are nearing to point when the seller will make more profit by parting it out.

In the $16K range, a local guy just bought a '69 XKE Rd. from Fla. Mechanically re-done but with an XJ engine, decent chrome, and new interior.

The bad side - terrible body panels and fit, with poor rust repair. This looks OK at 20 feet and drives well, but will never be a show car. Some rust repair in the next few weeks (floors and rockers) as finances dictate, then a bit more later before paint, but in the meantime he's got an OK driver.

They are out there.

Phil.

And at that price, do I thorough inspection for rust (ETypes are notorious for rust)

FWIW, I just did it in that range with my recent purchase of a 1970 OTS and a factory hardtop. After some research, I knew that I had an initial budget that would put me into dangerous territory. My choice was to either max it out on the purchase of a better looking car that probably has serious hidden issues, or go with a cheaper one with known issues and get it repaired right. I did the latter.

I now have it running pretty well and my first priority is getting the monocoque solid. It is currently in with a Jag repair shop (Lippincotts) getting new floors and rockers etc. The trunk floor will need to be repaired at some time, but they said it can wait for now if necessary. No surprises yet, so I am very happy. My goal is a good solid looking driver, not concours.

Hey Doc! I'm good - how are things?! I just divested myself of the '91 911 Carrera 2 - it was just sitting in the garage: I barely ever drove it, and there was nothing to "wrench" on it, so I decided it was time for a change. Meanwhile I have a 914 that I'm keeping for the moment - it's a driver, quite a nice one ('74 with original FI), but again, not needing any work. Hence the idea of getting a Jag to work on. I toyed with the idea of a GT6, but they are even scarcer than the E Types! (And I need a coupe - after my experience nearly rolling the TR6 I prefer to retain my skull intact :cooler: )

Thanks Ian, Basil, et al - I've really missed the down to earth advice here on BCF.

Please keep me in mind if you spot an XKE for sale somewhere in this price range. There's an interesting project that just sold on Ebay for $14k (apologies, Basil, if I'm not supposed to mention Ebay - I've forgotten if there's a rule here against that) ... item 330493629523. Seemed like an engine out restoration to me, but the bodywork looked sound.

914's are good fun to drive, easy to maintain. I'll keep me ear to th' ground down here for prospects. Stay in touch.

Mentioning EBAy or items on Ebay is not a problem - just that bashing sellers on EBay is not advisable. (Unfortunate comments about a seller here on BCF once cost a sell for someone and as it turned out, the comments that were made here were completely unfounded.

Ooh Ooh - found one, eBay # 280590869849. I guess that we all paid too much for ours and the seller is also making it very easy to buy as there is a direct e-mail to contact.

I was surprised by how many of these show up for E-Types.

I just signed in to post this one! This is in my backyard so I'll offer to go take a look.

I think that one will go very high ... it appears to have a lot going for it. I'm more looking for a coupe (FHC? 2+2?).

This one, in Los Angeles, appeared yesterday: Ebay # 300493664731 - trying to set up a time to go and see it. Doesn't have the wire wheels, though :-(

He has a buy it now price - $14,000

I would pass on a 2+2 if I where you. A coupe is a much better option in my opinion. There was a firm that produced a kit to convert coupes into roadsters. Not sure if they are still about?

What's the difference between the coupe and the 2+2? I definitely want a hard top - not a convertible.

So he does! That price is too good to be true, surely? I'll drop him a line and ask for more details.

The two features that I do not care for are the angle of the windscreen/roof line and the longer doors. The hinges are prone to failure due to the added weight.

My post was sarcasm as I also think that it is too good to be true. I was referring to what I think is a scam listing (only one picture and selling outside the eBay system).

Right! I sent an email anyway - will be interesting to see what I get in reply (if anything). W
