/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifHey guys I'm planning on using this tub as a restoration project next fall. I'm at a loss as to what color to paint it. Since it's going to come off the frame, I can go whatever way I want. I have been leaning a bit to the original green that's under the red paint. Anyone know what it's called?

I believe that's Java Green.

Mickey

That red paint looks like it might have been applied by the same guy that painted my TR6 the first time. If any of you want his number, I have it sitting on a roll in my bathroom.

Bill

I'm with Michey -- it looks like Java Green.

The question is: When you sand the Java off, will there be another color lurking below!?!?

Thanx guys. I haven't seen too many Spits this color, was it rare? Sammy, there's nothin' but green under the red. Or is that rust? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Anyway, unless someone went through an aweful lot of trouble it was Java Green.

Here's a shot of the wheel well;

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gifThanx Mickey. I actually bookmarked that page! I must say, Java is not a bad color at all. We'll see. I definately want to paint it a stock color. Custom colors on Spits really don't look right, atleast if your going for a resto. Prolly will be Java now. Thanx guys!

ps, you gotta like the way they didn't even take the lisence plate off for the last paintjob! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif (top pic)

[/ QUOTE ]I've not seen very many Spitfires in Java (other than this one and the remains of one I helped part out years ago), but then I don't believe BLMC used the color for more than a couple of years around 1975-76. At least from cars I've seen over the years, I suspect it was a bit more popular on the TR6 and TR7.

I did notice that one of the colors was actually incorrect -- the TR-250 pictured in Jasmine Yellow, actually isn't TR-250 Jasmine -- that's the color for later TR6 Jasmine. Okay, I suppose that it's supposed to indicate the color for other cars too, but in 1968 and 1969 the Jasmine color was much more tan. In 1970ish, they redid the color to be more of a yellow.

But that TR-250 really isn't correct 1968 Jasmine. I suppose I'm being nitpicky, but if one was going to go off that, they wouldn't realize how nasty the color originally was! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif (full disclosure -- my TR-250 was originally Jasmine!)

You crack me up Sammy... Andy, I think you're right. The tub is titled as a '76.

Sammy, I'm really curious now, as I've never before heard of (or seen) anything to indicate that Jasmine was ever anything but the very pale yellow. Are you sure your old TR250 was #34 color code...and original color?

I do know that, for the US market, there was no yellow offered from the latter part of 1963 (Jonquil, usually) to about 1968, when Jasmine was introduced. That, in turn, was replaced by the "mustardy" Saffron sometime around 1970 (mostly for 1971 models although I've seen a few original Saffron 1970 models).

I dunno... I had a 1972 jasmine TR6, and it didn't look nearly as "yellow" as the TR250 in that picture.

I suspect the picture has been "enhanced" or otherwise altered.

TR250 in Jasmine

My Tr250 is in Jasmine, but has been repainted at least once. The current color looks close to the picture on the Telegizer site. The areas still in original paint look more pale yellow rather than tan, but not-as-pale-as Primrose. There appears to be a slight hint of green in Jasmine added to Primrose. Anyways, thats what it looks to me.
I have attached a photo of my car with yours truly at the wheel on the way to work one fine morning. Yes, I know the racing stripe on the bonnet is wrong. Blame the DPO...

Well, maybe we're talking apples v. oranges, or at least apples v. different apples. So many factors involved here, including variances in cameras and/or film (and/or photofinishing), not to mention variances in monitors and monitor settings.

And, frankly, there's little guarantee that the particular TR250 on the site that Sammy mentioned is actually Jasmine. Could be a repaint in a slightly different yellow, either intentionally or simply due to different mix, thinning and/or application. (Good grief, anyone ever look at a line of "Signal Red" Triumphs at a car show? Lotta variations there!)

I will admit that Jasmine Yellow can look a bit more towards beige depending on light and condition of the finish. My Jasmine GT6+ did start to look somewhat beige or even off-white if left in the sun too long without a good polish and wax.

Kurtis, I see overspray on the photo of the commission number plate on "your" TR6. Had it been repainted before or during your ownership?

I don't remember any over spray on the commission plate when I owned the car, but as you mentioned, it’s there now. I know the entire car wasn't repainted since I owned it - unless they duplicated my flat black stripe on the trailing edge of the boot lid (that's how I first recognized it as my old car on eBay).

It's possible the car was repainted prior to my ownership, and I just don't recall the over spray, but I doubt it. The guy I bought the car from told me that he didn't think the car (the jasmine color) was an original color and must have been repainted. He told me his opinion was based on the fact that he didn't believe the jasmine color was even an originally available color. At the time, I didn't know squat about Triumph colors or color codes, so I took him at his word. However, as I started poking around the car, I couldn't find any evidence that it had ever been repainted, and I soon discovered that the paint code on the commission plate matched what was on the car.

I think I would have noticed the obvious over spray... but who knows. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
