MGB What came out as I pulled the heater core for MGB

Hi
As the heater was bypassed by the PO and he said it leaked, so I decided to pull it.
As I lifted it out there was also some remains of what appears to be some kind of seal. It is formed to match the two round tubes at the bottom of the housing. It was once pliable I think.
I looked on the Moss site and I think this must be part 51 on the heater IPB.
Is this correct?
Is this the best thing to use or is cutting and forming some other type of foam better?

Anything else I should look over while I am in here?

Thanks

Its what you should use. Its a rubber material and it will be a very tight fit when your reinstalling it. Since you have it out I highly recommend wire brushing it and repainting it. Replace the core and all the gaskets. Check and make sure the felt pads on the vent selector are still in place.

Mine was pretty much a foam strip and it left me scratching my head for a while too, until I figured out what to do with it. Seems like a couple of big grommets might do a better job, at least at the inlet/outlet.

While we're on the subject; I was just out trying to get the 80 B ready for inspection. I seems the P.O removed the heater box to paint it, and took the blower motor apart...but didn't not put the guts back into the blower motor, or hook the heater controls back up, or put the bottom 'door' on the box. I am also not really sure if he connected the hoses for the defroster(which must work this winter!). I don't see this rubber peice you speak of either, where exactly is it...or where do the defroster hoses connect to the heater box. To me it looks like my heater box would just dump hot air straight out the bottom(b/c the hatch door is missing) into a cavity under the dash....I can't really tell if the defroster hoses are connected to that cavity or not?

I am currently bidding on a complete heater box assemby on ebay to just replace the entire thing...But I'll still need find out how to hook up the defrosters

Re: What came out as I pulled the heater core for

It really gets fiddly and complex. The hoses had interior "seals" and the bulkhead-to-box had a big circular foam seal as well. The control cables are a gymnast's nightmare to connect and the drain tube defies a six yer old's dexterity...

...other than that, 'tis a "cakewalk".

Re: What came out as I pulled the heater core for

A cake walk on burning coals with shards of glass thrown in for fun. And the best part is when you put everything back together and your heater selector is stuck on defrost and wont move. Always fun doing that job twice.

great news guys.....What you did it did you follow any particular instruction or manual? I am probably gunna need something.

Re: What came out as I pulled the heater core for

Undo all the 3 bolts holding it down at the base unscrew the screw in the top tab undo the fuel vapor line that runs at the top of the fire will un hook the cable and then start the wrestling process. Its a lot easier to do this with the engine out as its much easier to wrestle the thing out when your standing right infront of it.

Install is just as much fun. Lube the snot out of the new rubber gasket as it will not go in without a fight.
