What are these seats?

These seats came in my Bugeye, but they are not original.
I think they may be from a later model Sprite or Midget.

Can anyone ID?

Also, if I wanted to covert them to original style bugeye seats, could I just get new foam and covers, or are the hardware/frames different?

thanks
Fred

Look like mkII sprite seats. Much more comfy than mkI seats IMO. I think the foams and covers are the only thing that is different.

Also would be MK1 Midget seats.
My 63 had those when I got it, but they were not nearly that nice.

Thanks guys,

They are pretty nice, but one has an ugly repair on the backrest that isn't seen in the pics, also I'm converting to red interior as original.

I agree, they seem more supportive than MK1 sprite seats. Maybe I'll just get new covers in red and keep them this style.

What's the best source for quality seat covers?

Fred

Used on MK I Midgets and MK II Sprites with a GAN2 and HAN7 prefix respectively. By far my favorite Spridget seats. I'm using them in a second Bugeye project.

Hi Fred: I would support your strategy to recover what you have. I just built two Bugeye sets from scratch and had to buy the frames, seat pan, foam, covers, etc. and it cost a fortune. Jim

X2.

I put a set of these in my Bugeye decades ago and had new covers made in leather. I'd like them.

The cover design is early GAN2 HAN7. They did away with the cross pleat across the seatback sometime in early 63. If I remember right, many replacement vendors only sell this cross pleated pattern though.

What have been the experiences with the covers from AH spares in terms of quality and fit?

Should I have an upholstery shop put 'em on, or do it myself (I've never done it)?

Fred

Same here, but get a quote for shipping.
I recently almost ordered a grille, the shipping would have been $75.
I added in a couple small gaskets and they jumped the shipping up, thought maybe a couple practically weightless gaskets could be added to the box for the grille.
No such luck.

Fred, I reupholstered my seats, and I had never done it before either. They turned out as good as any I've seen done professionally. I am pretty picky, and I didn't think it was all that easy, especially when trying to line up the lines in the back and seat. I probably spent most of my time working on the frames. I had to sand blast them, braze and weld, and then epoxy coat them. One seat base was beyond repair, but I was able to find one on Ebay. The seats ended up being very expensive, even with me doing all the work. I am looking at the Moss catalog, and it does look like the frames were the same up until 65, so it looks like there are a number of possibilities to go stock or not. Hopefully you will not have any repairs to do to the frame or base.

By the way, did you ever get you wiring harness? If so, did you install it?

Kevin

Guess I'll order the ah spares after checking shipping. Seats upholstery vinyl is $399 at Moss, $349 at VB, and $250 at ah spares. I'd pay more for quality, but sounds like ahspares is as good as the others.

Kevin, I did get the harness from ah spares but haven't installed yet. I have "while I'm at it disease" and just disassembled the dash, cleaned and painted the backs of all gauges and switches, rebuilt my original ignition/combo switch, sandblasted my dash, and ordered some POR15 to paint the dash before I recover it with vinyl.

I'm rebuilding a 1275 and rib case to replace the 948 and smooth case, plus I just bought a datsun 210 transmission to replace the rib case that isn't even in yet...

Plus my respray turned into stripping the body to bare metal, redoing some old bodywork, and I guess now I'll have to prep and paint the engine compartment since I'll be pulling the motor and trans. Of course, then I'll need to disassemble, rebuild and make pretty all the front suspension.

After that I guess I'll install the new harness, just before my interior redo...

Fred

Oh, and I just bought some disc brake front spindles to convert my perfectly good front drum brakes.
I am obviously ill, and the main reason I hang out here is to surround myself with others with a similar apparent "problem"...
