What am I missing?

I am trying to remove the headrests on a 1980 MGB.....other than brute force and ignorance, is there a way to remove them, or were they never intended to be removed?

I can't remember exactly but I do remember having alot of difficulty removing them. I did eventually get them out. I think there is a little tab at the bottom of each post that prevents them from coming out. So I can't really remember how exactly I did it but they do come out, I do remember spraying some WD-40 down there though.
