When I had my car rebuilt (TR3) I had a toyota exhaust system thrown on because it was cheap - it hung down low, dragged on things and made the car sound, well, like a toyota - yesterday, i stopped in to see what my local exhaust shop could do to improve things - he put on a resonator (which is essentially through pipe) and a nice chrome tip - sounds wonderful and looks great, especially under overpasses and I am convinced i have more power (certainly sounds more powerful) - very pleased /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

That's a strange choice for an exhaust system? You're in the running for the Pedro award.
A lot of Toyotas use smaller engines than the TR3. It's possible that you had too much back pressure.
We put one of those big Magnaflow mufflers with the 4" tip on my son's Honda. I left the resonator in place. It sounds pretty good. Not as deep as a TR, not too loud. The obnoxious buzz you hear on so many kids imports is due to the elimination of the resonator.
 
well, it there for $20 bucks at a time when costs were rising i just wanted to get the car on the road. Speaking of back pressure though, it was interesting how when I first pulled out the car seemed to hesitate on acceleration - seems to have worked itself out now - think it was probably coincidence since the muffler is still there - will replace that next when i can sneak another couple of bucks from SWMBO..

maybe the engine was cold and it had nothing to do with the new resonater.
