TR6 What’s the easy way to install those rear brake cylinder retaining plates?

Spend a couple hours screwing around with those TR6 (and probably other) rear brake cylinder retaining plates…

They’re not very intuitive, and difficult to keep the rubber boot and all the plates together.

There’s gotta be an easier way than struggling with them – and there must be an easier way to disassemble them then having two tiny pry bars, a hammer and a drift… that takes four hands to remove them!

Any tips (with pictures)?

The rubber boot is designed to fit on last? it is open on the bottom and streches over the wheel cylinder. I cannot remember exaclty, but i think the later installation of the rubber makes that part of the job easier. Then it was something like putting on of the flat piece on the wheel cylinder first (One is a shimm) and drivng the curved braket in last between the 2 so that the little L brackets on the end fall into place. hope this clear as mud

It seemed to me (and what I thought the manual implied) is the rubber boot goes on first, and is squished in place by all those plates…

If you put it on last, the big lip around the opening just flaps in the wind, and the only thing holding it is the friction on the handbrake actuator…

One of the keys (you mentioned) is “driving” the pieces in…. Sure seems like two bolts through backing plate (like the adjuster) would be A LOT better design than jamming three spring plates together!

One of my issues is I was hoping these parts just slid together…. But I guess not!

There's commonly a mold flashing along the center of the cylinder. You will need to grind that off. That will help a lot, but even under the best circumstances, it's fiddly.

The people who make parts for these cars often don't understand important aspects of their design. This is one of them.
 
Well, I wished I had seen that video before I went after the assembly!

That’s seems different than what’s in the TR6 maintenance manual, but it looks good!

I’m gonna have to look very carefully at the drawing in the TR6 boot to be sure I don’t have it confused!
