Just decided to treat meself to a birthday present. Should be here at about the right day, too. Or mebbe as soon as Basil's birthday. To replace the 10~20mm ∱4.5~5.6 wide-angle ( Mitsy will get that one, quite acceptable for "plinking") with a used Nikkor 12~24 ∱4.0 from an E-Bay seller in Japan. Not that the 10~20 is a bad piece of glass, I just know the 12~24 is Japanese made and of better construction. Steel F-Mount as opposed to plastic, faster glass, ∱4.0 through the range. Now the waiting...

Happy Birthday! It's nice to have lenses that are fairly wide and stay that way throughout the Zoom range. If I could just find a 100-400mm f2.8 that is constant aperture. (without needing to mortgage the house)

Happy birthday back at ya!

Any of the Nikkor looong lenses that're fast, it'd be the same kettle here. For now I settled for a 70~300 ∱4.5~5.6 VR. Full-frame equivalency gets me in the ballpark, albeit with some "noise" in accompaniment. I figure that 500mm mirror will be about the extent of my tele-lens acquisitions. I just don't use 'em enough.

On of my favorite lenses (and it was actually quite reasonable used) is a Canon EF 300mm Prime F4. My only minor complaint is the AF isn't super fast.

That li'l motor has a LOT of glass to move! One of my old AiS F-mount manual tele's is a Vivitar Series-1 200 ∱3.0. Heavy, but really sharp.

I recall seeing the one sitting on the wire. Great shots.

Very much enjoyed that. Thanks for posting it, hope ya don't mind that I've forwarded it to a friend "up north."

Got the lens today. All functions are working, looks VERY lightly used and optically clean and clear. Quite pleased. Will do some messin' about with it t'morrow. May take it to the local Veterans Park for some "artsy" shots. You guys are 'corrupting' me with the post-processing stuff! πŸ˜‰ :ROFLMAO:

G.A.S. attack quelled (for now πŸ˜‰). But I may have to go back to work!

Yup. From a Japanese seller on E-Bay, the photos on the ad were of this lens, quite a comprehensive set. Serial number matches the photos, it looks remarkably well treated "in the flesh" as well.

I'm always aware of the caveat emptor with buying on line, but think the Japanese sellers want to keep reputation intact. And the general Japanese attitude toward the things they own is more reverent.

I've had pretty decent luck buying from EBay. I usually take a hard look at how long the seller has been on EBay and what their feedback looks like.

Trip to the park was in bright sunlight, near noon. Need to go either earlier or later for better light. Meanwhile, one shot run thru Darktable. Shot in manual at 1/1250th, ∱11 ISO 800. Zoom at 14mm.

After "denoise" and a bit of thought:

Can really tell the difference with the denoise when looking at the red-ish lower glass on the chopper.

Was this a noise test? Curious why you chose ISO 800.

Quite honestly, the ISO was a preset choice some time before this and I didn't think about it. A likely holdover from my film days ("run what ya brung"). I framed the shot with the zoom, set aperture at ∱11 and dialed in the shutter speed to match about half-a-stop under. I coulda-shoulda rolled the ISO down to 100~200-ish and still used the smaller aperture, just didn't think of it!

Like I'd mentioned earlier, you guys are convincing me that post-processing is darkroom equivalency. πŸ˜‰

...I'm workin' on it...

Well, back in the film days you were reminded to change the ASA when you put a new roll in the camera.
I'd be lying if I said I never forgot to adjust the ISO, or white balance. This shoot I forgot the ISO and shot at 1000. I had a vague thought that my shutter speed was too high but didn't have a eureka moment.

Back then, the "standard" emulsion was either 200 or 400 ASA and didn't vary between rolls on a shoot. E'chrome 200 was the usual. So it was a "set it and forget it" most times. Oops....

I didn't even have that vague thought! Just dialed in the shutter speed to accommodate the ∱-stop!
Again, OOPS!

Old habits die hard. Just one more lesson for me: "Check ALL th' settings, bozo!" πŸ˜‰
