Well the Big Day arrived. Let the questions begin

My TR3 was delivered last night. (Kudos to Magic Carpet Transporters). I'll apologize in advance for all the questions I know I'm going to ask. I consider myself a pretty decent mechanic and I'm armed with good manuals, but there's nothing like advice from those who have "been there".
Let's start with an easy one: When I pulled the scuttle vent knob, it came right out of the dash. Can't find a break down on the linkage anywhere. Any help?

How much came out with the knob? The knob fits over a hexagonal piece, which has a button to engage the hole in the knob. The hex piece is permanently fastened (solder IIRC) to a thin rod that runs through the scuttle (and a grommet) out to the linkage under the vent, where it gets clamped by a small hex head screw into a round piece that is supposed to pivot as the mechanism moves (so the rod doesn't bend).

Mine broke next to the clamp. Since at the time I didn't know where to buy a replacement, I made my own from a bicycle spoke, a hex standoff and a small set screw.

Bingo... you've been there. The hex piece stayed in the knob and pulled off of the thin rod.
I'm not convinced that it's soldered to the rod. I see a small "ramped" slot milled in the end of the hex piece. Like it may slide over some kind of a catch?
I guess I'll tear into later. Right now I just want to drive and get to know the car.

Makes sense to me. I've never been able to tell that the vent does much anyway.

Guys, thanks for the links.
Here's the push/pull rod that attaches to the knob.
The knob is locked onto the little white metal hex piece with a "spring pin" that allows easy removal.
The hex piece appears to be press fit or shrunk onto a 3" section of brass rod (approx 3/16" dia). This rod has a slot milled down it's length that I assume lines up with a pin that keeps it from rotating. I haven't gone into the dash to find this pin.
The brass rod then has a piece of 1/16" rigid wire attached to it (soldered?)
Finally this wire rod attaches to the lever that raises or lowers the vent.
My problem is: The hex piece pulled off the brass piece. Think I'll try super glue for the fix.

My opinion, you're looking at a previous repair. Good luck with the superglue.

Yes, the rod should be one piece. Good luck with gluing - there is a lot of stress on that joint - it's a straight on pull - I wouldn't chance it - it's too fiddly a piece to re-do... I suggest you just buy a new piece. TRF part number 112019. They sometimes go on sale for +- 15 bucks - I see they've gone up a bit...

Best schematic of how it all goes together is from Don Elliott - check part way down in an old posting I did asking the same question a while ago...
