After 6 months of looking we finally purchased a Volvo 240. We looked at 3 of them, an Audi, a volvo 940, a few avengers but ended up back with the 240. We stumbld across this one, an 89 with an 80,000 engine in it. SLOW, but a really cool car. Dual brake lines, disk all around, doors like a vault, even the jack is more well thought out than modern cars. Did i mention slow?

He is happy with it, he loves it as much as I do my 8. I did not realize it was considered a compact car, it is probably only 2 inches wider than the 8, headlights like small TVs, probably weighs the same as my H3
 
And Boy! are they aerodynamic! hehehhe.
It'll be a great car. Ya can't kill a Volvo. Welll ya can, but it's usually take a lot.
 
They call their forum Brickboard and there is the turbobrick forum. I am even in the middle of a thread about the rover V8

When my son started driving, I wanted to get him a car that was safe, reliable, easy to work on, inexpensive enough to throw away if he wrecked it, and otherwise economical. I ended up with a 1987 240, 85000 miles on it, for $1900. I have to say that I'm really impressed with it, and if I were looking for a car today just for getting around town, commuting, and so on, I'd get one in an instant.

Parts availability is very good, and parts are not expensive. There are a number of places, IPD seems to be the dominant one, that specialize in parts and accessories for them. Even performance equipment.

Calling it a "brick" is a little harsh, I think. It's a good, solid sedan and, to the degree it is a brick, that's not necessarily bad. There are a LOT worse things in the world!

Did you get one with Over Drive? My daughter's 240 is pretty peppy I think for around town.
 
Great find, they are like little big body diesal Mercedes.

Or mini Swedish tanks. :wink:

My son's car was named Gustav by his friends the first day. It is an over drive car. So far I have replaced the shocks and struts, one lower ball joint and one wheel bearing. I am very please with it so far, I have been driving it to and from work to "figure it out".

I have figured out if I found a 242 turbo, I would buy it. The milage seems very good (high 20's)and it moves pretty good, at least good enough for a 16 year old. We have some body work to do on it and we are going with the local neighborhood body man for a cheap paint shoot (we will do the prep as he sits and watchs the Steelers). We dumped the 14 inch 185 tires for some 16 inch 215/55 tires. I am seriously considering going with the sport springs from IDP (lowers it 1.5 inches).

MY poor 8 is feeling neglected I think
 
WE will have to swap images of our offspring's Volvos. The daughter's has a name, though I can't remember it. She bought it off a college student at the University who's parents bought her a new Chevrolet and she felt obligated to drive the chevy. She cried when the daughter took it home. She had refused to sell it to someone who wouldn't care for it properly, and had turned down several offers.

My daughter is well along the way of teacher herself auto repair. She calls me about twice a year for help, otherwise the guys at Napa give her advice.
 
I suspect those two will help you play this game - The square goes there and the wedge goes there :cheers: they look great.
 
Call me silly, but I would go for a Rover V8 for several reason 1, I am familar with the engine, 2, the large number off samre parts I have, 3, the weight, 4 I have a tranny for it already. Maybe I am OCD but I like to stick to what I know and that is Rover
 
OK, my son has decided on colors for his car, I am not wild about the color choices. I guess two tones are coming back but his is with graphite metalic with a dark blue metallic on the flat surfaces. Both colors are off a Dodges. This is kind of wild a crazy for him, I had kind of expect him to choose white or gray being he is a pretty conservative. He chose the Volvo for the safety and milage, I was trying to talk him into a Subaru SVX. He even chose to have the trim removed to give it a sleeker look.

I am debating, would it be wrong to try to influence him to different colors?
