Well that was certainly fun!

Okay-okay... I'm an unabashed nerd at times. Went to the Tampa Convention Center today and met up with Julian. We had a great natter, I got to walk about and sniff at the latest and greatest goings-on in the world of I.T.

This stuff ain't yer gran'far's Oldsmobile, kiddies. TERRABYTES of data being exchanged from that place in an *eyeblink*... Enuff gear to run MAJOR governments.

To my gratification Linux is now certainly RESPECTABLE. Last one of these conventions I attended, "Mad Dog" John Hall couldn't draw flies... NOW... WOW!

ohnevermind... Y'all are sayin' "it's all geek to me!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Suffice it to say: Two more BCF members got a chance to 'face-to-face' and it was an absolute delight from my perspective.

Well Doc,if it makes you happy, bully for you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gifIt is all "geek" to me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Stuart. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Yup Stu, my paradigm for livin': "If ya ain't havin' fun yer doin' somefin' wrong!"

Sort of on topic - my "work" machine's power supply died a couple of days ago & the treasurer said I could replace the whole thing. My new computer came today - much faster, 4 times the memory, 4 times the disk space (plus RAID 1) and so on.

There was a time when this would have been exciting. These days I look at it as a week of installing software, copying files, and so on.

At least it isn't beige again.

We don't have budget to send any of us to those sorts of things anymore, but I do still enjoy the geek stuff. It's been paying the bills for quite a few years now, as well. Always some neat stuff to oogle and play with.

I saw a Linux ad on TV the other day... It made me think of you Doc.

Linux rocks, y'all. Too bad us button-down IT executive types keep telling our support kids they can't have any. (Yep - when I ain't playing Army Reserve geezer, I'm an IT guy in real life).

The RAID setup on a desktop 'puter is way cool, though. It's seriously amazing what's being done these days. If you're still hands-on, Doc, it's a great time to be in the biz.

It was great to meet you, Doc

We ended up pushing files at 75 Gigabits per second. Just back from it now.
ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

sheesh... that's a lot of data ... ~fast~

and yeah, IBM has been advertising Linux servers for a while now. The coolest part about LInux these days, IMO, is that it is getting broad recognition, even from major companies. Some of those companies are pitching in to help develop cool new stuff, and it's staying Open Source... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

While we're "geeking out" here, I thought I'd share this Linux Xgl Desktop demo I found on YouTube...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz_2vKq5cZk

It makes Windows Vista's "Aero" desktop look like last year's left over liver, and it multi-tasks in ways that Windows can only dream about.

I'm kinda partial to the wobbly windows and the spinning cube virtual desktop system... Makes me wanna build another Linux box to play with all the new toys they have again... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

VM has me fascinated. My clients are "budget-minded" (Read: CHEAP!) and a XenVM Linux server will help me "further" their proclivity AND my 'niche' is secured! That visit kinda pushed me 'over the edge'. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

...I'm stoked!... can ya tell?!?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

For those of us who don't know a gigabyte from an overbite...

"HUH?" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

RAID on a desk top, how's that?

Sounds like the solution to my backup prob.

I run RAID arrays on my desktop machine. I ran RAID-0 for a long time, but the new crop of HDs are pretty fast so RAID-0 isn't that big a performance gain for general use when compared to the cost, noise and heat from multiple drives. And the storage gain isn't important either since huge drives are so cheap now. Since then I've changed to RAID-1 with two big drives. Now if a drive goes out, I continue working uninterrupted until I replace the bad one.

ONE POINT TWENTY-ONE GIGAWATTS!?!?!?!

Last weekend Fry's had a sale on a 1 TeraByte External HDD (I'm betting it as an array of sorts), and a internal 750GB HDD. Man, I wish I had the disposable income I had just 5 years ago...

RAID 1 certainly reduces the risk of hard drive failure, but it doesn't eliminate the need for regular backups and a tested restore procedure. (I know the computer geeks know this but I don't want to oversell the RAID concept).

(RAID level 1 uses two hard drives in parallel. If one fails you can continue using the other. After you replace the broken drive, the system should recover automatically and start mirroring the data again. RAID level 0 is used to optimize disk performance by spreading the data over two drives.)

Absolutely. RAID-1 is only to protect against mechanical failure. It does not protect against virus, malware, software issues, lightening, fire, theft, etc.

I keep everything backed up to external hard drive, with the really important stuff on CD/DVD in a safe deposit box.
