Thanks Peter for the tip. Took awile to get the vice grips just right but boy oh boy.

Had the engine smooth as silk at about 1500 RPM, good throtle responce etc. etc. Man does that engine sound good. Have both carbs at 7 flats, seems about right at the moment.

It is my humble opinion no matter what it said on the box that fuel pump really puts out.

Now, guess over the next few weeks or so I decide on a proper fuel pump.

You guys can not immigian what a releif this is.
Now, what pump, elec. an orginal SU Moss 377-175 or the solid state SU 77295 or the little one 377-420 or something else entirely. Think thse carbs must like about a pound or two max not 4.5 at all.

Whoo Hooo, back to the garage to work on the remaing carpet. Drivers side front, the toughest one.

Nice work Jack. That has got to feel much better.

Great news Jack.

Great feeling isn't it? Will make a good story over a beer.

I can't recommend the pump that I use because everyone tells me that it is cheap junk and will fail shortly after being installed. They have been telling me this for the past four years (40,000 miles). They also tell me that the noise it makes will drive me crazy. Luckily, I'm not under the car enough to hear it for any length of time.

And is it a secret?

Nope, just need to get the part number this afternoon.

But seriously, everyone I mentioned it to after I installed told me stories of impending doom. So, I may just be lucky.

Ha, I don't think Miss Agatha will ever go 40K in the rest of my life.

I never had a problems with that pump in a '75 Midg daily driver that I had for two years nor in my '67 911 for 10 years.

I couldn't even hear it once 911 got started, but in the Midg eeeekkkkk!

These H1 carbs seem to want a very low PSI. In fact the lower the better I would settle for one pound.

and what would that be,

OK, I went and looked at the pump. For the life of me I can't remember the brand. The label is now worn off too. It came from the local auto parts store and cost about $50 IIRC. It is a cylinder shape with outlet/inlet at each end. It buzzes constantly, but with an isolating mount you can barely hear it. And you can not hear it at all when the car is running.

When it warms up outside I'll try to take it loose and see if there are any markings on it.

Trever and folks, I went and got a fuel pressure regulator, have it set at 1 lb. Still leaks, but I have a reasonable happy engine as it now will idle at 1100 and smooth.

Still fuel getting through those darn jets that is unwanted and unneeded. Boy does she start nice, right now.

Will continue to work this, not a lot left that I can think of, but am going to change from metal gaskets, copper, to fiber, seems I do have a few for the top of the tube in any case. Just can not beleive those corks are leeking.

Jack, something keeps telling me that if you still have fuel coming up through the jets, the float chambers are too full!! I would try resetting float level!

Good luck there Jack, you'll do it.

This happens when the engine is off as well. It just leaks through.

Ok, one pound I have now, and they still leak. Going to change some metal gaskets for fiber and see what happens.

No changed my mind, changed copper washers on the top of the jet chanber for soft alum ones. Did not leak the first 5 min. Doing a longer leak check now. Sure wish I knew where those soft alum washers the right size came from.

Jack,

Is it beyond the bounds of possibility for you to use an SU pump? After all, that is what all the later models of Sprite and Midget had, replacing the mechanical AC pump on the 948cc engine in the Bugeye.

Even if you pick up a scruffy used one, Dave Dubois can restore it to better-than-new for you - he can even rip out those $%#@*^$* arcing contacts and replace all the electrical stuff in an SU pump with solid-state stuff.

Just an idea...

Oh, not at all Chris and if I do go that route I will get a new one of course. I think the fuel pressure regulator ruled out the over pressure thing,,,, more to follow.
