You know that sinking feeling that you and the boss are going to have a "meeting"???? We just got back from vacation and before I left, I had the feeling me and the boss were gonna sit down. The guys at work said that he waits till 5 minutes before quittin' time to come in and fire you.

I hadn't seen or heard from the main boss all day. :confuse: I usually see him around 2:30 when he drops in from the main building to see how things are going.

I kept an eye one the time thinking he might drop in last minute for "the talk". :frown: I got tied up in what I was doing and wasn't paying attention to the clock till I heard his voice. :eeek:

He came in and asked what was going on. I went down the list, not thinking of what might be comming. it seemed like a regualr daily visit.

After our discussion, I went to put my nitrile gloves back on to finish the oil change on the E46 M3 I was working one when he stopped me.

"Don't put your gloves back on, we need to have a meeting."

He did the same thing w/ the last guy he gave some bad news to.

You coulda heard a pin drop as me heart fell straight down me throat and out me arse onto the floor. :cryin:

The whole time I'm thinking, "I FREAKIN' KNEW IT !!!!!! I knew I shoulda taken the Ferrari out for hot laps durring lunch !!!" :wall:

Well.... we sit down and one of our sales reps stops in to see if we need any shop supplies. :madder: I looked at his samples briefly, then told him politely we were about to have a meeting and this wasn't a good time. I wanted to get this over with as quickly as possible.

We sit down and he started in on, "You've been here for blah blah blah, and done some good things we like, blah blah blah.... BUT..............you ask the #2 guy in the company too many questions on what he wants you to do w/ what's going on in the shop....SO...........................

......................we want you to be in charge of the shop!

We don't have any problem w/ you performance nor do we worry about if what you think is the right decision. Just do what you think best and if we don't like it, we'll do it different next time. We know that everything you do will be done properly and w/ safety in mind. Bottom line; you're not going to do everything the way we want, so don't worry about it and just do it. We'll adjust as we go along and redo as nessissary."

Man, what a relief !!!!

Ya had me scared, Billy-me-boy. Don't do that!

Congrats on the move up. Nice to see quality work rewarded.

It was very humbling, especially considering they put their lives in my hands everytime the take the cars out on the track. I always strive to put our driver's saftey first and I'm glad they noticed. That alone is reward enough...but hey, if ya want to give me a promotion and a raise too.

( I'm SUPER anal when it comes to these cars. My RB...not so much.)

Dude, you think you were scared ?!?!?!?!

I still feel like puking !!!

To top it all off, while on vacation I learned one of our cars was involved in an on-track "incident" and needed to be towed off.

congrats man! (looks good on you) course now you might have to grow up (or at least fix the Midget)

can we call it even at the Midget? I'm going through a mid life crisis right now so I aint ready to let off yet.

Billy,

It's nice to see the "good guys" win once-in-awhile.
Tell us more about your job - sounds interesting.

- Doug

Glad to hear your meeting went the opposite direction mine did back on Jan 26th. Got to work early, "Can I see you for a minute?" Long story short, 1900 people had the same "meeting" that morning.

Long story short, I'm directly responsible for the care, feeding and R&D of 5 M3's and a Ferrari 360 Challenge car. You know, the usual plus any fabrication of custom parts etc. Three weeks out the month we prep and the final week we travel and race. Well, 4 M3's really, the E30 isn't a M3. Boss #2 put a S52 in it and it screams. That's the one that had the incident. Seems a C3 Vette crowded him a bit. The E30 is mainly a DE car. We have 3 E46 M3's and one E36 M3 as well.

Main boss has partial interest in a GT3 cup car, but the other guy owns a prestigious shop and has his own tech, so I'm not really involved with that one.....yet

Peter, sorry to hear it bro, Hang in there. I'm proof positive you just never know what's around the corner.

Peter-
Sorry to hear the unfortunate news... I don't like hearing about any "new" members to the club I'm already in... hang in there.

AND Congrats to kellysguy!

Congratulations Kellysguy, pressure and responsibility, Oh boy! Maybe they are looking for a fall guy. -- elrey

That's great news, especially with the way things have been going the last couple of years. Congratulations!!! Last year I had to lay off 185 employees, one at a time. At the end it was my turn to go. Even when you know it's coming, it's not easy to take. When you think it's coming and it turns out to be a promotion, what a great feeling! Way to go!!

Larry

Yikes, Larry, what a sad paragraph. Good luck, and Peter and G-man and the untold rest also! I'm starting to see more trucks on the highway every day. I hope it is a good sign. I wonder often if each new job could be my last. --elrey

Well, as Red Green says: "We're all in this together."

And I didn't figger you fer a "half-empty" kinda guy, el.

Billy, sounds like you have an awesome boss. I had one that told me I had been doing something wrong for 5 months. He waited until the six month review to "correct my actions", making a note in my file, because he was afraid of being "confrontational". I was 25 years old at the time and had to explain to him that waiting for five months and forcing a note in my file was much more confrontational than simply asking me to do it a different way immediately. I had been left to figure much out on my own in that situation as well. Set a very frustrating tone for the next few years. I had to be much more pro-active in verifying the things that I had to figure out on my own were okay. Even then it was like pulling teeth if it wasn't during one of the six month reviews. I was able to keep "corrective notes" out of my file by doing that though.

Good luck with it and congratulations!

Maybe you should take up writing thrillers in your spare time..
Congratulations and it sounds like you have a great job.
