Wedge Central Swirl Pot

What the heck is inside the fuel "central swirl pot"???

My intermittent fuel issue has led me to disassembling and cleaning the entire fuel system - oh joy.

The swirl pump has something rattling inside. How strange! It is welded closed - inspection requires whacking it apart.

It also doesn't look like much of a swirl pot, as the entry points are at the top and on the center line. Wouldn't a swirl pot be better with the entry points on the sides and have the pipes aimed against the side walls to induce swirl??

Perhaps my problem could be caused by whatever is rattling around may be plugging the outlet??? I guess I'll build another (improved) one and see. But I am curious if there's some hidden function within the darned thing..

Scotty,
The swirl pot actually came in two or three different designs from TVR. I'll be trying to pick up some for my inventory next week when I'm in the UK.
The swirl pot de-aerates the fuel prior to its recirculation in the fuel system. The swirl pot is placed between the two fuel tanks and they are know for leaking and rotting away. The swirl pot on the US cars has two lines off the top, one going to each tank, and one off the bottom that goes to the fuel pump.

Thanks Marshall.

I have it out and in my hands. When I shake it, there's something loose inside with a bit of mass, that clatters around. Is this normal???

Hey - have a great trip!!

Never mind guys. I got my answer from the wise blokes on the Piston Heads Forum. There's a pre-screen within the "swirl" pot (more of a collection pot if you ask me). It's apparently press-fit on, but doesn't stay on. Two out of two responders said theirs had also come loose. I will be fabricating a new one...

Must have this sorted out before the 4L drops in. Picked up the 5 speed box the other day and can’t wait for a slightly lower 1st and overdrive!
