Website ads

If I start up a website (family pictures, commercial product, discussion forum, whatever) and put ads on the pages (which usually link to the advertiser's website), what actually produces income from the ads? And who gets the income?

Just because someone views my "Exciting video of slime growth" page, and there are ads on the page, is any income generated from the ad? If so, for me? for the company in the ad? for both of us, etc.?

Or does the page viewer actually have to click the ad for any income to be generated?

Many of the people I know use ad block software so they never even see the ads - but the page is still "hit".

Example: I use Gmail. Ads (often related to mail content) appear on the page where I read the mail. Just because the ad is there, is Google getting any revenue from the ad?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks.

The short answer is yes. The advertiser pays and Google, as "publisher", collects. We get advertizing solicitations from them frequently usually with "special offers" of a free month or whatever. (Interestingly, these ads come via snail-mail.)

It depends on the specific advertisement.

Most ads these days pay out on a "click" basis. To make any money with those sorts of advertisements the visitors to the site have to click on the advertisement.

There are also ads that pay out onan impression. To make money with those sorts of ads you have to have a really high traffic site because it may take a thousand ad showings to make anything.

There are other methods as well, but those are the most prevalent.
