with the ignition on and fuel pump pushing the carb will leak gas out of the air filter. it even happens when the car is running at idle speed?? whats going on?
 
One of three main reasons - fuel pump (pressure too high); carburetter fuel level set too high; or the fuel valve is leaking - i.e. it is not cutting off the flow of fuel when the float reaches its maximum height.
 
And if the fuel valve(needle and seat) is leaking; it is either worn or gunked up with contamination(dirty fuel).

Check the fuel pressure, make sure it is under 3 psi. As far as the float level is. Do a web search as for the DCOE's float level is dependent on the type of float found. Serial number on the float chamber will advise you of what is inside the float bowl.
 
it cant be gunked yet its new. i have a regulator on it that i bought from webber that was "supposed" to be be preset. what would i use to check that psi?
 
a fuel press gauge rented from one of them parts stores would do the trick, I think. If you have a regulator on it, I assume you can dial it in to 3 - 4psi. Personally, if you're running an SU fuel pump, I would check those float levels in the carbs, and make sure that needle valve is stopping the fuel flow when it should.


Just because it's new don't mean it's working the way it should.
 
Float height will be 8mm~10mm (as Ron says, depending on which DCOE), float hung vertically with the "tongue" for the valve just touching the needle ball. Gasket in place, distance measured from float top to lid gasket face. It "sounds" as if the supply pressure is too high, tho. Any low pressure reading gauge will work to see what the pump is putting out. Just remember you're fussin' with fuel. Take appropriate safety measures.
