Weber carb conversion, Midget 1500

OK, my two cents worth.
First, Alec, America got "smog" versions of the Zenith Stromgerg. The EPA didn't like people driving around with the choke on after the car was warm so they required automatic chokes. The problem is that they were designed so poorly that they would stay on all the time. The engines had other smog equipment that made them run hot and then the mixture would fluctuate between too rich and too lean, and the rubber membrane would melt. Idle speed was either too high or too low and never stable.

yb710, The vacuum hose to the distributor is an economy thing. The car will run well with or without the hose, but when at part throttle the timing is advanced slightly allowing for better low-pressure burning and a bit better mileage. This shouldn't affect the max power at all, but you do after all spend most of the time at part throttle.

Donn's note is certainly correct. To be clear, though; you keep talking about a 'twin' setup. It's not *twin* Z-S carbs that the North American 1500 got, as opposed to a (Weber) single manifold.

US Midgets are outfitted with a single, 1.5" (hence CD150) Stromberg with (as pointed out) a very poor 'automatic' choke that works very poorly, if at all. What is being discussed is an upgrade from a single CD150, to a progressive downdraught carb. The Weber setup, although not as desireable (to some) as the twin SU setup, is still miles ahead of the US stock configuration, single ZS.
