SU's are a very capable carb. If I were going to make any modifications to an engine whatsoever, I would replace strombergs with a SU's. Mildly modified 1 3/4" carbs will and have supported 4cyl MG race motors with 200+hp (well depending on whose dyno you use /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif ). They are also great on a "hot" street motor. A triple H6 set-up should be good for 290hp or so, all the while producing a ton of torque.
"My personal take on SU's, Strombergs and Webers, is that if I had my choice for a stock or mildly modified engine, I'd stick with SU's...and if I had a TR6, I'd have three SU's on it and that would be enough fuel/air to support as much engine mods as I could stand without having a completly intractable car"
Exactly! Just like any carb, set up correctly, they'll be great on the street.
