wear tear tranny repair

okay, so i finally got up enough nerve to take apart my 1275 tranny. i actually have three non-working tranny's but only took apart two. it wasn't all that hard but the wear on the cones, gears, and layshaft are major.

i need to replace some parts on the main shaft and wanted to know if anyone has had experience at main shaft dissassembly. i have a couple of manuals, but some advice from the forum may save me hassles down the road. i would like to do this myself and not just buy a remanufactured main shaft.

i will post some pictures on my website of some of the gear damage like the laygear and the reverse gear. it's obvious why these tranny's lock up after seeing some of the wear.

Let us know when the pictures are up. I've done a few main shafts, 3rd gear reassembly is the most difficult due to the split ring retainers and the spring loaded pin in behind them. I can tell you how I've done it in the past or you can look here. 1st and second are pretty straight forward. If you replace the laygear replace 1st and the reverse idler. 2nd and 3rd should be done based on wear. I have a few 2nd and 3rd gears for a 22G1100 laygear and I may have some others as well if you need them.

thanks chris, i should have the pictures up tonight. i was reading about the retainers and pin and although it doesn't sound difficult, i'm a little smarter than that! the laygears, especially one of them are almost void of teeth at one end. it's pretty amazing how distroyed some of the gears are.

i posted some pics on the my website under "transmission". The third gear, laygear, and reverse gear are shot. i disassembled the mainshaft tonight and accidently hit the third gear while trying to remove the bearing housing plate. the ball bearings and springs shot out across the basement. managed to find two springs and balls. oh well. looks like quite an expense to replace some of these gears. i will take apart the third tranny this weekend to see what i have there. anyway, more photos to follow. overall, i am not to unhappy with the result. at least i can do the work myself.

Some nasty bits there.

yeah, i would like to take credit for some or all of it, but i have a feeling some of that was there when i bought the car.

Ah yes, That's mostly tear rather than wear. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif I have a laygear that is a twin to yours. 1st gear looks pretty similar too! Jackrabbit starts, that's what shears laygears like that!!

If you find yourself in need of new parts, I would highly recommend you talk to John at Quantumechanics in CT. He is an LBC transmission specialist who knows what he is doing and is helpful to boot! Not that far from Allentown either!
I should be diving into my tranny one of these days soon too, so maybe we can provide eachother some moral support, hehe!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

thanks for the contact. i am at least pleased at the ability to take it apart myself. this was the one job i was staying away from. considering the damage, i decided i could do no worse. now that it's all apart, i feel really good that i can repair the mainshaft myself. i will keep everyone updated on the work until it's done, but watch out for those dang ballbearings and springs.

Pat said something about a hairpin being used to reinstall them.

yeah, i will definitely need someone to help me reassemble. right now its a matter of money since i have about $500 in parts to replace just to start. perhaps the third tranny is in better shape.

hey jack, what was the condition of your tranny? is yours an original or ribbed? did you have it checked or rebuilt?

A good idea when disassembling is to have an old towel draped over everything, that way balls and springs don't fly so far (and you get to learn how to work blindfolded hehe)

My tranny is a factory gold box that at most had a few hundred miles on it. It was nasty but no wear showed on anything at all. It was new inside. And it is a smooth box.

It works in all gears, is tight as a tick, but I relly need to get the car running and running well so I can fully check it out although I heard no noises.

that's good to hear since you never really mentioned the tranny condition. i think with a little work and some parts i can achieve the same condition.
.
this has been such a great project not only because of the personal satisfaction, but simply because i drove this car for so long with all this wear and damage. when it's all finished and i drive it for the first time, i am sure it will be a fantastic experience (probably a little quiter and peppier too).
