General TR way to loud in-take noise

Driving the herald I have come to the conclusion that the current free flow air intake is just way way to loud. Currently I have a foam pancake type filter, open all the way around. It sounds great at idle, is a blast when accelerating. BUT just deafeningly loud when actually driving (think near glass pack noise levels, just from the opposite end of the car!)

Easy option is just go back to stock, but my original filter housing looks like junk.

Anyone have experience with a decent air filter system which will somewhat reduce noise levels.

Actually I'm very surprised by that, my TRs are so noisy just with normal wind level I don't hear much under the hood - are you sure it is just the air flow into the carburetors?

my car is also quite noisy, but the sound is coming from under the hood, is tied to the engine speed and gets louder and louder the more I push on the gas pedal. It is not a tapping sound or other mechanical sound, it sort of sound like I don't have a muffler so I am sort of guessing that it it from the intake.

You sure you don't have an exhaust leak
Intake noises don't sound like exhaust

I would think that an exhaust manifold leak at one of the cylinders or leak at the manifold, header pipe is starting out and getting worse as you accelerate.
