Is it better to replace or rebuild (send it out)the water pump on my BJ8 phase 1. 3/8 pulley I think. Has anyone used an AH Spares pump? Moss?

Not me Healey surgeons was my vendor of choice.

However, some of the new aftermarket pumps may require that the housing be ground back a small bit to fit properly on the engine.TH

BCS is a Moss distributor; generally they sell the Moss stuff at or below Moss's price. If they want that much more for a pump I wouldn't be surprised if there was a difference. I'd call David or Michael at BCS and ask them.

The last water pump I got from Moss was 'County' brand. There has been some negative reports on County products, most notably bearings. The pump looks fine--and included the studs, which are hard to find, and the gasket--but looks could be deceiving.

I had a pretty bad water pump experience with one purchased from "The major British car parts supplier". I know we're not into bashing parts suppliers here on the forum so I won't mention any specific names. This was on a BN2 so it may not be relevant to your situation.

I purchased a new water pump from ****, upon arrival I immeidately noticed the casting barely looked like the original. I do inspection of parts for a living so anything more than .100" on a rough casting looks significantly different to me. Anyway the bolt pattern, pulley flange offset and impeller depth and diameters looked close so I installed it and took the car out for a test drive. Needless to say I made it about 10 miles before this brand new water pump blew its lunch.

I limped the car home, called them and needless to say they weren't surprised. They were however VERY accomodating, they overnighted for Saturday delvery ($$) a new one. This was after I explained I was supposed to be driving the car to the vintage races at Road America the very next day (not to race but to spectate).

I had everything pulled apart that night (Friday) and the next morning I waited for the package which arrived right on time. I sprayed a quick coat of paint on this new pump, let it set up for 15 minutes and went to install it on the car. Well guess what, it didn't fit. The casting was too thick or offset and I couldn't get the original nuts on the studs. I had to take it off, grind away the reliefs with a die grinder and repaint it. I did get it on and made it (albeit late) to RA and it's been fine for about 3000 miles or so now.

My feelings about this have really soured me on this supplier. I could go on about but this post is already WAAY long. :yesnod:

IMO, it's not bashing when you report a personal experience and stick to the facts (like you did). Thanks to your post, I'm going to take a close look at the water pump I got from Moss, since I bought is as a spare (and sometimes carry it in the boot).

Moss--and pretty much all the suppliers--make an honest effort to deliver quality when possible (usually--of course there are exceptions). Sometimes, I think they make do because, well, an ill-fitting water pump may be better than no water pump in a pinch (as an aside, Moss went out of their way, working with a Healey guru--possibly THE Healey guru--to provide new heat shields for the 100s that were as correct as they possibly could be).

OTOH, some things like aftermarket bumpers are known to be pure cr*p, but I knew one small parts shop that had an OEM bumper they couldn't sell--people didn't want to spend $500 for the good bumper but went for the $200 POS instead. That's one of the dilemmas the suppliers face.

I Had bought new water pump from moss, After going through the trouble of installing it, It leaked! I had to take it back out and order a replacement from moss. It seems to work well so far! I have ordered parts from moss for many years however lately they have been sending me too many defective parts, bad water pumps, defective carb parts, dried up tubes of sealent ect... I am tired of shipping things back! I have decided to look to other vender's for my parts needs.
