Water pump - now Oil Pump

Thanks to all who commented on my enquiries about the water pump rebuild/replacement. I ended up talking with and sending it to Peter Caldwell at Worldwide Auto Parts, Inc. As you know he rebuilds Armstrong lever shocks and I trust his work.

While on the subject of pumps, how about the oil pump? I have the earlier rotor model for my BT7. Can it be rebuilt? Who does that - Bill Bolton and Joe Curto do not. It is a fairly expensive item to replace. I am doing a total engine rebuild so if I should replace it I will, but I obviously don't want to if I don't need to. The car had about 60,000 on it when it was stored away in the mid seventies. It sat until now. I am replacing the pressure relief valve and spring. Thanks for advice!

I think Keoke has good advice. It would be a shame to get the engine back together only to find that you were constantly worried about low oil pressure.

The pump has two rotors inside of the bottom cover. To check for wear, you need to:
1- Measure the outer rotor to pump housing clearance. Should be no more than .006".
2- Measure the inner rotor to outer rotor clearance. Should be no more than .004".
3- Measure the rotors to cover plate clearance. Should be no more than .002".
4- the bottom cover plate must be perfectly flat with no wear marks.

If you decide to measure your pump, these clearances must be very PRECISELY measured & everything put back in like it was.

British Parts NW sells new rotor gears for about $75 and a new pump for about $230.
