water pipe assembly

I'm having a bit of a problem with my engine reassembly. When fitting the water pipe to the water pump it is hitting the lower steering coupler. I'm passing the water pipe from the water pump down with the rubber hose part passing through the arched part of the frame the steering U-Bolts connect to. Any idea what i'm doing wrong?

I don't know what the TR4 uses but that looks like the coupler that goes on the the top of a TR6 steering shaft. The coupler that goes on the bottom looks more like a u-joint. It's much smaller.

I'm pretty sure that the upper and lower couplers are the same. I'm more unsure if I've got the water pipe routed down from the pump correctly. I can't seem to find a good picture of what it should look like.

Just a few thoughts:

Will it still hit once the other end is connected to the radiator?

Sometimes the replacement molded hoses are too long and have to be cut down.

There is a slight curve in the metal tube; turning the tube or swapping it end-for-end may help.

I've been going through this. My pipe was hitting in the same place. I lubed up each hose with anti-seize so I could twist and turn, shorten and lengthen, and cuss and cuss until I got it better than it was. I decided that the pipe was on upside down from what I could tell in the manual. I got it off the coupling, but it is now touching the frame. I will get back to it after a few other things are done so if you come up with a solution, I'm all ears.

I know that does not help, but "I feel your pain." Good luck.

It took us a while but we got it figured out, i'll try to explain. The diagram in the manual was correct for me.

There is a slight bend in the tube, that needs to go on the lower side, pretty much pointing towards the ground. We were making the mistake of trying to point the lower bend in the pipe towards the radiator, make the outer bend of the pipe point back towards the fan belt/center of the car. Or you could say the inside bend of the pipe will be facing the steering coupler. This will force you to turn the pipe to the correct angle inside the upper radiator hose, the one attached to the water pump. Then put the lower hose on and using it's bend, point the hose towards the radiator. Once the radiator is in place, it should hold it out of the way of the steering coupler.

Good luck, it took me the better part of 2 days to figure this out.
