Our Son (#2 Kid) had his car totalled ('96 Geo Prizem). He has $2250 to spend on a replacement. How can I figure outwhat the fees would be on another car? I might be making a trip up to Federal Way,if I find a carto deliver to him.I would probably trailer it up,which means I wouldhave an empty trailer heading South. - Doug

Doug - Where in Washington will it be registered? (town, etc.)

What kind of fees do you mean? sales tax? use fee? registration? emissions?

Once you know the specifics of where it will be registered, then you can find out the various fees. Here's some info:

https://www.dmv.org/wa-washington/car-registration.php#Vehicle-Registration-Fees

(I think if your son is over 18, he should be figuring out these things. Not you.)

There's sales tax (generally about 9.5%, depending on where), there's RTA taxes and fees (so you can pay for others to use traffic-slowing busses) there is State Patrol inspection....simple as confirming VIN, however, I know folks who have had full-on wipers, license lights, turn signals, high beam, headlamp adjustment, even degree of window tint, then there is emissions (unless it was done here in the last six months), then the actual licensing and fees for that..plus new plates.....on $2250, about $200 in sales, tax, probably $100-150 in other fees and inspections...but it varies by locale.

Does your kid work on cars?
I do believe it would be a whole lot cheaper (unless some super-cool car shows up in your state that the seller has no clue...like a 289 Cobra for $2250) for you to come up and find one locally...already registered.....

You're a brave and generous man. It would have to be a pretty spectacular car to trailer it up to Federal Way from northern California (given the time, trouble and expense). The biggest thing in Washington (as described) is sales tax.

Tom,

I posted that he lives in Federal Way,Washington.
I am trying to find a car,locally,that I can inspect,before
I deliver it to him.
You do "What you have to do" for Family.
He (our Son) is high - functioning Autistic,& NOT a "Car Guy".
If you've had "NORMAL" Kids - then you don't "get it".
Most of the cars in the Seattle area are rusty/worn out, from
what I've been told.
IF you know of a great car for around $2,000 - PLEASE
let me know about it.
