This is the bypass hose as I pulled it today from the elbow/thermostat assembly.

Totally blocked solid - yikes!

Good thing you comments on the other posts regarding the thermostat prompted me to rebuild the rest of the cooling system (in addition to the already recorded radiator)

I'm sure most of the cooling system in my old 948 looks a lot like that. Yucky!

Doubtful.

If it were mine, I would be considering a teardown and rebuild. To continue to run that engine is just asking for trouble.

I agree -

boil and measure block $250
recore rad $200
new hoses $50 (all CDN)

watching the Etype overheat at British Car Day while my temp gauge didn't budge. Priceless.

OK I actually feel guilty for saying that - didn't want him to overheat either, but, it did feel good to know my cooling system was absolutely as good as it could be.

Might not be a bad idea. I'd use a pressure washer at a min.

I'd suggest trying the cheap and easy things first. Do a good flushing of the block, using some standard cooling-system cleaner, then get the radiator done, and finally new hoses. You might want to flush it again in a couple of months. I really think that will do it, but if not, it's mostly things you'll need to do anyway, and not a big investment.

Makin a big deal out of a little sludge. Flush, maybe even reverse flush and re-evaluate. Dump the hoses and get ready to drive. Bob

Gotta agree with Bob on this one....before I started tearing everything apart, I'd backflush that sucker until clear water runs out.

Hi guys. Other hoses were not this bad, but they are all going to be replaced as a matter of course since they are past their sell-by date.

I am planning on flushing her out aggressively with some of this;

and then driving her some before I do anything more drastic.

Isn't that just the little hose on the underside of the head? I'd flush it all out. When you open up the radiator petcock, does coolant come out, or is that blocked too?
