Walking through this auto repair shop

Where mostly you get treated like you know nothing.

I spied a four cyl head setting with the valves up and said out loud Hmmm, an early A 40 head. The guy looked at me like I was crazy. hehe. I turned the head over to check the number and it was a 2A629. I said where is the rest of the engine that head has a crack in it. He said what size engine does that go on, I said a 948cc MG, Sprite, Moris Minor, or Mini.

He kind of stared at me a bit and said come. Way way in the back, in an out building, dry and secure, covered up was a Mini with the head off. One with a wooden rear like a small station wagon.

I said who does this belong to a customer? He said noooo it belongs to the repair shop owner and he wanted to sell it but it would not run with that head and he has not found another.

I said, you know I have a head at home in the garage just like that one, same number even. NEVER THROW ANY PARTS AWAY.

Left a note for the boss, I've known Bill for a number of years but we have never spoken about little cars, to call me if he is intrested. He even ownes a junk yard, no MGs or Sprites or old brit stuff though he said some time back someone from england bought everything and shiped it back.

Bet I get treated with more respect in the future.

Sounds like you will have a stronger friendship with the shop and owner... particularly if you sell them the cylinder head.

I have a similar story from a friend but his went the other way. My friend was looking for a machine shop to rebuild his Spitfire engine. He drove up with the engine in pieces in the back of his truck. After a brief explanation that he had a small bore British engine that needed work the shop owner went outside with my friend to look at the pieces. The shop owner looked at the block and said, "Hmmmm, that's the Triumph 1300 isn't it?" My friend knew he'd found a shop he could deal with.

Interesting thread. I've been on both "sides" of this situation. Most recent was an Alfa repair shop in Miami a few years back. Bro-in-law has his business next door to the place so told me of the Alfa biz moving in. I dropped into the place on a visit to the family. The father/son team were polite but reticent. After a few visits over time the son mentioned he was looking for a GTV windshield. I told him I had three in Tampa, he was welcome to look 'em over and have "pick-o-the-litter". He and a bud made the trip to th' hovel and got the Grand Tour. On his return to Miami he said to bro-in-law: "Wasn't sure if your B-I-L was fulla c**p or not but after seein' what he's got and done, I know he's th' real deal."

Now when I visit them it's like a family reunion. I go there when visiting the in-laws to get out from under "the hens" and have the opportunity to get grease under me fingernails. We BS and have a great time, I get to see some nice examples of Italian machinery and play out. If I were living there I suspect I'd be "employed" again.

Was in the back of my mind Ray. But then I would need another garage.

"One step at a time" Jack!

And what's wrong with the drive-way for a daily driver?? Miss Agatha could have "Mini Pearl" as a sister!! :jester:

Thought I hit the quote button.

"Was in the back of my mind Ray. But then I would need another garage."

And that's a problem because.....

Because I live in a gated community with lots of restrictions and no land in fact to build more. Have a three car garage and about 3300 sq feet of house.

No room.

Doesn't sound like a problem to me.

If its cheap and not running and you have what is needed to make it run hmmmm.

Or you could always sell it and make some cash (thats the quote for the wifey)

Sounds like way to much house to keep up, perhaps a garage conversion would help to lower that household Sq/ft and it would be less for you to keep clean??? sounds good to me.

Sounds like the Mini Traveler. Well worth having, cute and useful. I also have an extra cyclinder head or two he could park the Mini under. If he's interested in selling, send up a flare.

which, given the ingenuity of these boards and the size of the cars should give you room for the 2 main vehicles, Miss A and about 3 more LBC's :driving:

:iagree: Miss Agatha and a Mini should only take up one of those bays together!! :jester:

course then there's the children

Swaped the Cylinder head for my truck bill at his shop.

Most expensive head in the world $79.

And JP yep it will be for sale, he says no rust and is a daily driver. What's it worth, round numbers.

For an idea of the worth of the Traveller, go to Mini Mania and select the Cars for Sale link. From there, select Private Sellers and you'll be able to sort for vans, Countrymen, Travellers, and Estates. Failing that, under the commercial sellers on the MM board you should find "Mini Guy" in California. He's been importing and trading in Minis for a decade and probably would not mind telling you what its worth.

I've got a Mini Wagon AND a 14' boat ON a trailer in a small one car garage here!
