Thanks BCF!

Razor sharp timing, perfect carbs, 5 silky smooth gears and a bloody big smile on my face!

Ozarks! Here we come!

Super excellent. Wish I had those silky gears especally second.

Congrats... now... where's the video?

Tomorrow Trevor, I need to reaquaint myself with my wife and child that I haven't seen for 4 days. And I think I need something to eat too.
Just a minor coolant leak, I'm hoping it's from the expansion tank, but I'll give it a good run tomorrow.

I'm thinking of your advice, and cutting that portion of the tunnel out, the more I use the loud pedal, the more the yoke twists and rubs.

As a complete amatuer, now that I have perma-grease on my fingers, am I now officially a wrencher?

You're talking about the shifter yoke rubbing on the lip of the opening of the tunnel?

BTW you've inspired me. I'm going to turn off my phone for a few days and get the ugly bug running!

No, the forward u-joint yoke on the propshaft, rubbing just slightly aft of the shifter hole.
I bent most of it (tunnel lip) upwards with a pry bar, but I guess I didn't get all of it. The propshaft seems to just sit a little higher at the fron than I'm used to. I don't mind cutting, the carpet will hide it.

I'm sure you've checked your transmission mount, but check it again. Be sure it is assembled and seated properly. I'll see if I can't get a picture of mine tomorrow and see how close it sits to the tunnel.

YAY!

Trevor,
All looks and feels OK.
The two from the side are good, the two through the pads are good, and the two big evil ones through the chasis are good.
I would like to suspect that the tunnel has been used as a step in it's history, and has been crimped down a touch.
I'll get the engine lift in there, and use it's force to try bend it back.
If it lifts the entire car off the ground, then I think that'll be enough.
I'd appreciate a pic, just to compare if anything, a subtle difference in its position.

I started her up at 5:30 this morning, just because she sounds so good!

Nice work, Baz. I'm impressed -- very quick work.

Wonderful! Now I've only got 4 weeks to finish mine!

I just reinstalled mine and it is close (I never realized) I can just get my finger between the two (and I have girly hands). However, my kit is several years old and I'm sure the mounts have compressed a bit over time.

Did you install new motor mounts too?

Yes I did, and they gave me the fits putting them in too.
The old ones had formed to the brackets and were no bother, but the new ones needed more persuaion to get on.
I have girly hands too, and can easily fit my finger through, I think you mean the two (top & bottom) transmission mounts, so perhaps they'll settle eventually?
Is the tunnel on a BE the same size/shape as mine?
I'll see if I can get some video of that area, with sound so I know for sure, that way I'm not hacking chunks out of the tunnel for no reason.

Found the coolant leak.... cheap hose clamp to blame.

This seems to be a common issue with the 5-sp conversion. I've dimpled the poop out of mine and it still hits when the rear suspension unloads now and then. I saw one guy who had his U-joint yokes turned down as much as he could without cutting into the u-joint cap hole. Worked for him. For me, when I put the engine and trans back in, I shove the whole mess to the right side as much as I can before I tighten the trans side and bottom bolts. Must be good for an extra 0.5mm of clearance?? Otherwise, considering that the only effect is some burnishing of the yoke/tunnel contact patch, think of it as a warning buzzer on the fun meter and set it off as often as you can.

Glen
