Volvo P1800ES

I agree. Neat cars and would not mind owning one at all. Wasn't it a P1800 that some guy put 2 million miles on it? He was on various talk shows awhile back. Maybe it was 1 million miles. Still.....!!!!! I never saw Volvo exploit it though.
 
Which brings up another question - I wonder what car has the highest milage in the world?

Might have been a record. It must have been 2 million miles.
 
...and of course they could be considered "somewhat British", since many of them had a Jensen-built body.
After college, one of my friends purchased a P1800 and I got to drive it several times. Another friend had a 122S that was actually faster (ligher) but looked too dowdy to me.I liked Volvos, but felt they lacked power. On a whim, I purchased a partly-completed P1800 "project" with a Ford 289 engine and 4 speed. When it was all put together, it went like a bat and was generally good, but the entire "balance" of the car seemed spoiled compared to my friend's much-slower, unmolested P1800. I sold it and bought an 850 Mini.
Fair or not, to this day, I am uninterested in V-8 conversions, based on my experience with that P1800.
One of my students has a nice mustard-yellow P1800 coupe and a guy in my town has one of the P1800 "wagons". I always think of "T.H.E. Saint" when I see one.
 
I've seen a number of these in the last few weeks at car shows and at Mid Ohio - there was one on the track too. At Mad Dogs... the other week we were talking to a guy with a BEAUTIFULLY restored P1800 wagon... and he mentioned the guy with 2 million miles as they're both in the same club. He said he's still driving the car and they way he achieved the milage was to do "crazy" stuff like drive the car to Alabama cause he read a review about a new restaurant that he thought sounded good!! I wonder if the engine is original!

That's a neat story. I thought Hondas and Toyotas were reliable, but I have never seen one with over 500,000 miles. But two million miles, that is truly extraordinary. I think it's funny that his new car broke down on the way home from the dealership, so he bought the Volvo. That kind of reminds me of an accident I witnessed about 5 or 6 years ago, a man made an illegal U-turn an ran into a black SUV (the guy's car was older and pretty much solid steel) hard, the SUV sustained major damage and the lady driving the SUV got out screaming, not because she was hurt, but because she was driving home from the dealership in a brand new SUV. My 52 International has well over 500,000 miles on it. I would be able to be more specific if the spedo hadn't broken a couple years ago.
 
There are quite a few cars that would be good for this sort of mileage, I just depends on the care that the vehicle has received over the years. Volvo owners tend to be more careful and fastidious about maintenance I suppose. If you see your car more as a long-term investment than as a disposable conveyance then you are halfway there.

My experiances with Volvo's is the oposite of the 2 million mile man. I recon the reason they last so long is they are broken down that much you can't wear em out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
 
Ah, but it's a well-known fact that you Aussies can be a bit rough on the machinery mate /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif A P1800ES wouldn't look right with a 'roo bar stuck on the front now would it? Mind you, a 'roo bar would be a definite improvement to some of the abominations we have on the road over here.
