T-Series Volvo engine in MG-TD ?

Hi Gang,
In the past I've come across MG-TD's with Volvo engines installed. Supposedly, Volvo copied the XPAG engine and used them for many years. Supposed to be a bolt-in replacement engine. Does anyone know which years Volvo used this engine? Also, is the same true of the transmission? The reason I'm asking is an older Volvo has shown up locally (1953), that I may be able to get fairly cheap. Yes, I do have an MG-TD, and it does have an original drivetrain. Might be nice to have a spare.

I have heard that this is possbile, but have never actually seen it done...but I think the Volvo would make a nice addition to your collection anyhow ;-))

A different opinion...

If the Volvo is a 1953 model year I would keep it intact even if you purchase it. An early example of a Volvo like that is quite rare and it would be a shame to basically part it out... unless the Volvo is too far gone to economically restore.

My Dad had some engine swap books from the 60's & 70's and one of the articles in it was a Volvo engine in a TD. I'll see if he still has them. One article was stuffing a Ford 302 engine in a MGB.

Are we talking about a Volvo PV 444 and the like?
If so parts as well as cars are still plentiful in Sweden.
Can't kill them even if you'd want to. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif
Great cars, great engines!!

the volvo is an 1800cc engine. xpag parts are readily available. are you sure you want to take a 50 year old original car and modify it? tom

I know it can be done...

There is one person in southern Ontario racing MG TC's that have Volve engines installed

I have also seen an MG TD road car out there with a Volvo engine installed, the owner probably wouldn't have done it but that is the way he purchased it so he's going to keep it that way...

For future reference, the engines out of Volvos from the late 50's and early '60's are the ones that are often used in MG-TD's. They use a "B16" engine. Since the '53 Volvo engine wouldn't work, I did not buy it. As far as I know it was junked. Too bad becuase it was a convertable.

Convertible??? I've never heard of a Volvo convertible from that era at all... did you get a picture? Sounds like it would have been a neat car and possibly a very rare car, almost a shame to scrap it...

The owner of the Volvo said it was indeed a rare car, and hated to get rid of it but she was moving and it had to go. I did not go to look at it because there was the real danger that it'd follow me home. I know, and care, nothing about Volvos. If the engine was usable as a 'spare' for my 'TD thats one thing but another junker is another all together. Besides, my wife would've buried me (probably alive) in it.
