Volvo begets Camry... [car shopping]

So awhile back I was on the chase of a 1985 Volvo wagon (4-speed O/D) since my daily driver - only car - needs to be replaced.

That one just didn't work out, wasn't as good a car it could be.

So now the new beater will be an ultra-boring 1989 Camry with 171K kilometres /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/tired.gif It is a 5-speed, but other than that has zero car enthusiast value, but then I suppose there is merit in good old reliability /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/square.gif

I'd been thinking something along the lines of perhaps a VW Passat, which seems somehow more interesting than a plain jane Camry. I suppose my fun/funky car will have to wait a little while longer. And I had such high hopes this time... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Sorry the Volvo didn't work out. Nothing wrong with a reliable daily beater, even if it does suck out a bit of your soul every time you drive it -- and I should know, I drive a Hyundai Accent...

Why have ultra-boring when you can probably find something that's merely boring? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

There's a lot to be said for reliable, mundane and more roomy transport for the basic day-to-day chores.

I think of mine as a "facilitator" that helps the interesting cars stay alive, and me too, for that matter....

2 Observations.

1. Top Gear did a "buy a sports coupe for 1500 pounds" feature recently. They're only conclusion - if you buy a low budget car - buy Japanese.

2. As per earlier advice from this board - buy reliable (japanese) and pour your love into your LBC (or your photography as the case may be)

So far it's worked for me even if the Intrepid is even more boring than a Camry - at least it's 5 spd

Ah yes... Good perspective /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

And of course it just shows my impatience at myself... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif My time will come, oh yes it will... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer.gif

I wouldn't look at it as a complete bore....I am enthusiastic about every car we've got, even the "normal" ones. Get out there and give it a nice wax and detailing, make a few minor improvements and be proud of it

I hear ya Sherlock. For all that a Camry is, they somehow com out as intersting as a white sheet. They're comfortable, reliable, have acceptable performance, and are usually well trimmed. But they are generic. I always thought that if you were gonna do somthing illegal, you should use a gray Camry for a getaway car, because thay blend in so well.

You can't kill that thing, it'll haul your photo gear easily and it has 'stealth' capability as well! Take care of it and it'll be the best parts-getter you'll ever own.

EDIT: :fixed:

Course if that's your house - maybe you should have gone with the Volvo - or something equally nasty /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif
