Volvo 940 turbo known problems

I'm looking at a 92 Volvo 940 turbo for my kids to drive. It doesn't run, but the mechanic that has it says it needs a fuel pump. I'm just wondering If these cars have any bad habits before I buy it. Don't want to get stuck with someone elses problem.

Car has 2 fuel pumps, pre pump in tank, and main under car. If you buy it, go to Volvo dealer (want dealer parts for this) and buy a "radio suppression relay", and the"Fuel pump relay". Replace them, and toss the originals (if they indeed work) in the glovebox. Radio relay is underhood, and most of the injection and ignition systems work thru it. Don't be fooled by the name....Fuel pump relay is self explanitory. Both do fail, and will strand the car. AC "climate control" units can fail, remove control head from dash, open and re solder. Beware of the distributor caps as well. PITA to change, and they often crack, or just track under the black plastic "shield" they have on them. A lot of folks remove the shield before fitting them, doesn't make them any easier to fix, just easier to spot when they fail.

Jesse is too kind.

PASS on that sled!!!

TOYOTA!!!

I dunno Doc, the swede has a lot to reccommend it. RWD. Timing belt on a B230FT is 2 hours if you are loafing, same with plugs. Ever done a belt or the rear bank plugs on a V6 camry? Toyotas are great cars, but the Volvo might take kid abuse better. Not to mention that the turbos are pretty sprightly for a brick....

Dude wants $400 for it. Kinda hard to ignore. Just don't want to get MORE indebt because of it.

When is the last time it ran? Any way to verify? If it has been DOA for a while, you could be facing a "bigger deal" of fuel related issues. The ethanol gas does not store well. Take a sniff at the fuel filler, if it smells bad it is.

If you are gonna replace the timing belt on that Volvo you would be wise to replace the water pump at the same time while you've got it apart.

S80 different car, different problems. Not as likely to just completely quit at speed by surprise.
