The volt/reg has finally given up the ghost on my twin-cam. I have a new one ordered from one of the big "3" but was wondering, is this just a bolt in item, or do i need to set it up on the bench first as per the workshop manual?
 
In theory, the regulators should be a plug and play item. That said, I have seen several that wouldn't work with a perfectly good generator. You might want to consider returning the one you ordered and talking to Bob Jeffers about his solid state conversion that he does to regulators. He takes your old regulator, removes the insides, implants a circuit board that is calibrated to the generator you are using (so that the generator can never put out more current than it is rated for, regardless of load) and returns the whole thing all polished up, looking and working better than new.
