Who was it that said this is the guy? All I find is books on minis? I would like a reference with the head numbers and tune up stuff mostly.

What is the title I should be looking for?

Yep, he was into mini's, but the book titled "tuning the A-series for performance and economy" has much info applicable to sprites.

Tuning BL's A-Series Engine
ISBN 085429 414 7
A FOULIS motoring book
Haynes Publishing Group
copyright David Vizard 1985

And that is just what I had guessed and needed to know.

Also- his book "How to modify your Mini" is a great reference for any "A" block English car. There is some info in there that is not in his other books- if it is still available.

Jack, get the A-series engine book, it's the "bible". Every Spridget freak should have alteast one copy, I think I have three copies. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

My word Hap, how do you read three copies. Hmmm, one at home, one in shop, one in car?

Here's my thumbnail review of the book:

Anyone building an A series engine should own and read a copy prior to dismantiling the engine.

That said: The book is not very well organized and doen't have a useful index to help locate specfic topics. While it contains otherwise unobtainable information, it is, at least, 20 years out of date. Common topics such as "the best" lubrication or type of bearing to use are not current. Don't expect it to answer all of your questions, but it will be a useful addition to your library.

I got my copy off of ebay. There are usually 2 to 5 copies listed at any given time. Searching for "vizard" is enough to get you to the two copies that are listed now.

Jack, yeah, one at home, one at the shop and one just in case. As Thomb mentioned some information is somewhat outdated, we're doing way more with Spridget race engines now than Vizard shows in his book. Whats great about Vizard's book is his testing of certian items which is very relevent today, also his basic instructions like "how to degree a cam" years ago, his explanation made more sense to me than any of the other engine books, he explain things very well. He also a great source on the differnet parts that were in the engines and different aftermarket parts, Sure some things have changed over the years, but for the most part, the best A-series engine book ever wriiten. MGB and other British car folks can only wish they had a book this good to help them. Also David goes into great detail about making horsepower and his general advice is timeless. He also did books for the Chevy guys, he now resides in NC and at times consults for the Nascar boys.

Got one Amazon $21 delivered. Cheeper than eBay.

Great Jack

Some of the data is outdated, but then again it is the a series bible.
