I'll be in Dorking from Nov 11 to Nov 14. I'm planning to go either early or stay after to see significant sites like Crewe, Longbridge, Charles Ware Motors - you know, the important places!! :D All silliness aside, I would like to connect with anyone from here on that side of the pond if possible. Also what should I make time for while I'm over there? Let me know!

Hi Peter,

Alas, I live on this side of the pond, but studied in London and travel there several times a year on business. I have a number of recommendations. There are the big ones, such as the British Museum, which has an amazing collection of archeological artifacts from around the world, including the Elgin Marbles (taken from the Parthenon) and the Rosetta Stone. The Imperial War Museum and the Churchill War Rooms are also great. The Crown Jewels -- together with a remarkable collection of medieval armor and weaponry -- are at the Tower of London. In terms of transportation-related goodies, I highly highly highly recommend the London Transport Museum in Covent Gardens. It includes dozens of classic London busses, rail cars, taxis from the dawn of the age of transport to the present. Also in Covent Gardens is the London Film Museum, which for several years has hosted an exhibit called Bond in Motion, which includes numerous vehicles from the Bond films. Lots of fun.

Enjoy!

Peter - if you're in Dorking and need a place to "wind down", check out Box Hill.

If I recall, you've got an aviation interest, so in the Dorking area there's also:

Tangmere: https://www.tangmere-museum.org.uk (They've got a Gloster Meteor F8.)

Wingsmuseum: https://www.wingsmuseum.co.uk/gallery.htm (Restoration and Archeology)

Biggin Hill: https://bigginhillheritagehangar.co.uk (Spitfire restorations)

And north of London, there's of course Bletchley Park: https://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/content/hist/ (Enigma/Colossus and Turing's Bombe)

and the re-created Anglo-Saxon village at Stow: https://www.weststow.org/

And down south, historic Portsmouth Docks: https://www.historicdockyard.co.uk/site-attractions/attractions/36-hours-jutland-1916

And so much more ...
