Vintage race at Watkins Glen

Hi, I'm a newer member, just wanted to pass along what a great time I had at the Vintage race at the Glen the weekend of 9/10- 9/12. I'm sure as many of you know MG was the featured manufacturer! I live about 40min from the Glen so with out question I was going, what a great time, not only to see the MG's race but to just walk around and look at all the cars and to talk with other owners it was a great time! I had planned to drive my '76B over but I had a slight problem the morning of the race, I work as a professinal Firefighter and had brought my car to work on Friday (I was working nights) to clean it and have it looking nice for the Glen, well Sat morning when I started my car to go home, I was cranking on the starter a little bit, it was a little chilly so she didn't start right up as usual, when all of a sudden smoke started ot come out of the steering colum, when I looked down a flame was shooting out of the turn signal opening, needless to say I got quite concerned! I suppose my years as a firefighter kicked in, I remained calm !? and was able to blow the flames out! I was able to drive the car home, took the steerimg colum apart and for some reason the turn signal dip switch shorted and stared to burn. All I can think is something got wet when I washed the car?? Any opions or comments on this? I've ordered a replacement part, but would hate to have the same problem occur, so any comments or suggestions would be great! Thanks, Mack

That's a new one for me......couldn't imagine what would have caused that. Keeping in mind that any convertible is going to get wet from time to time, so this should not be a problem. You would have spotted any sign that the wire may have chafed, but the fire may have masked it.......it would still be my first guess though.

I had exactly the same thing happen on my '72 Midget. Through the years, the copper contacts lost their elasticity, and finally shorted together, resulting in the fire. I changed the switch, but the aftermarket Taiwan replacement failed in a short time, although in a different mode. I finally installed a genuine Lucas switch from a "B", and have had no further problem.
Gee, imagine using a Lucas switch for reliability !
Maybe the sun will rise in the west. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But, another perfect example of why I preach carrying an extinguisher on board.

Welcome Mack!
I'd agree with the advice above re: your turn signal....it just wore out and shorted (with the water "helping" it to short). Moss Motors or Victoria British may be able to supply a replacement part.
Glad you were able to enjoy the Watkin Glen VIntage. I made the Lime Rock Vintage, but was unable to get to the Glen event due to a race-conflict. A bunch of my friends were there and told me it was great.
We will be running one of our Fall club-race events at the Glen on Oct 22 thru 24. There will be a mix of old and new stuff including (probably) 4 race-Sprites including mine. Admission is free but the gate-keepers prefer that your name be on their list. If you (or anybody else in the area) wants to stop by on any of those days, e-mail me at least a week before and I'll put you on the gatekeepers list. Very laid-back racing and some great ops for photos. More info at:

Three of our MG club members made the trip from Denver to the Glen for that weekend. Two towed their vintage MG racers and one flew into New York City and drove a rental car (which he did not race).

They had a great trip, in spite of one who broke down during the Saturday races. They all said it was like being transported back in time to see all those MGs racing together. Wish I had been there!

Mack....no advice on the switch fire...but do suggest a battery cutoff switch behind passenger seat so you can reach it instantly in event of electrical issue. Can save a lot of wiring....and then you always shut off the battery when you are working on the car because it isn't such at PITA to do so.

Indeed, it was a fabulous weekend, and for MG enthusiasts, it was a wonderful celebration of the 50th anniversary of the running of the Collier Cup! For those who weren't there, Bobby Rahal was the guest of honour and I believe one of the latest inductees in Franklin Avenue's Walk of Fame. I have to admit that one of my favourite events of the annual Vintage Grand Prix Vintage Race Weekend is the reenactment of the original races through the Glen. And if you ever get a chance to run the old course (when it's secured for the purpose, of course) be sure to sign up, it's a blast!

aeronca65t, The replys from you and the other guys makes me feel better, I had already ordered a new switch and am waiting for it. Your weekend at the Glen in Oct. sounds great, I'll send a note in a week or two with a list of names of people who plan to go with me. I only have one question, how well does your sprite run with snow tires? (ha ha) I joke but that is a possability up here that time of the year /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif! I know what snow does to people from your neck of the woods, used to live in S. Jersey years ago. All kidding aside, I'm sure it will be a great race weekend!
