Where are the "hidden" vin's or serial numbers located on Sprites and Midgets. Recently saw a Bugeye registered as a '67, sounds kind of sneaky.
 
Right front shock mounting pad toward the rear curled edge. It's not always visible without removing paint. This only began on second generation cars, so you won't find it on a Bugeye. Later cars (after mid-60's also had it on the right front footwell floorboard. Due to corrosion or commonly being replaced, most times it's no longer there. Only serial number engraved, not any prefixes or suffixes.
 
Our BEs have a brass plate with serial number pop-riveted to the left front 'angled' frame rail (if memory serves). Doug
 
For a bugeye, you might get lucky and find the chassis number written in yellow crayon behind the dashboard or on the horizontal panel behind the seats. The chassis number is affixed to the downrail under the carbs on a plate affixed by phillips head screws (not pop-riveted) and is usually the first thing changed when someone is playing games. There is also a body ID plate starting with BAE on the right door pillar which usually doesn't get changed when someone messes with the chassis plate. BMIHT can look up this number and supply the correct chassis number.
 
My error: the plate is screwed in place. The Yellow BE is tucked away for the winter and t'other is still in the shop, sans such a plate. Doug
