newbee here from saratoga springs ny area. have 66 tr4a/irs and od. after 10 yrs am ready to put fenders etc. back on. basically a race motor but a hot street cam (built to run at limerock but to old to start now). car was totally original bought out of tx. & no rust. the vin plate was simply an aluminum plate-similar to the sm.alum plate on the pass side with the body # but approx. size of the standard plate & mounted in the same spot. all the info was hand stamped in. can't figue why standard plate was never put in--did they run out of reg. plates and in rush to ship put in a home made plate? car was legally reg. in tx. anyways i want to put anewplate in. & am looking for some-one who can stamp new plate with correct size & font of originals--in a straight line. ( oh that sounds harsh but doing it free hand is not easy ).allhelp appreciated. this board seems to be a real winner. herb. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hi Herb,

My 65 TR4A's commision plate looks just like you described, but what I think happened is the original paint/ink/whatever on the plate flaked off. What I would suggest for stamping the new plate is use a 1x4 clamped over it to help you align your dies - cheaper than paying someone to do it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Practice, practice, practice on a piece of scrap aluminum sheet. Took me about two hours of screw-ups before I got my little technique down, similar to what is described above. Part of the joy of ownership is writing your own birth certificate.

Yes, nervous work. I practiced on an unfolded Coke can -- thin but gave me a feel for it. Doesn't take a hard smack to make the numbers.
