VIN on floor

Just in case some of you had never seen the location of the floor VIN (as I hadn't before today)...

Might come in handy when buying 'project cars' etc.! That's the *passenger* side, btw. Driver's floor has no such markings.

The later ones had them stamped there. But I do not believe the earlies did.

Anyone know when they started stamping them there?

Is that the interior of the floor or the exterior? Is this the body VIN or the frame VIN? I would assume body due to it's location?
 
It was my understanding that the number on the floor is the vehicle identification number VIN, the number used for registration. The body number as far as I know was never used for anything. I assumed they went to that type number when they went to the later numbering system with the 1500 cars.

The BE didn't have a number stamped in at all. I thought the middle cars (Sprite II to Midget III) had the number on the front right shock mount.
 
Hmm that's interesting. Reason why I ask is that my VIN that is the frame VIN the one located on the frame rail in the engine bay is missing. I do have the body number plate that is in the doors (and on my title) but would like to know what the true VIN to my car is so I could learn a little more about it.

When I was working on it I can tell that the car was originally blue at one time and the color runs front to back and I see no repairs where say for instance someone piece a new clip or frame on mine. So I think the tag just got lost over the years.

I will check tonight to see if anything is there.
