I need to install the small VIN number plate back on the car... where does it go?

depends on year.....pre 68 is on driver side fenderwell inside engine compartment a little behind shock mount. 68 and on is on the driver side A-post on the door jamb when you open the door.
 
If you are referring to the skinny little plate with only a number stamped in it, it is the body number plate and is mounted in the drivers forward door-jamb, vertically.
