vibrating/buzzing stick shift

Hello. My '71 TR6 just started to make a buzzing sound in the shift lever when I accelerate and the engine rpm's increase under load. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so what was the fix? Many thanks!

There is a spring and ball in the base of the shifter that reduces vibration. Yours may be missing.
The lack of these pieces will not cause problems.

I solved this problem by installing the Toyota 5-speed conversion...

Only kidding. As Doug mentions, there are a couple of springs down in there under the shift lever. One or both of them may have broken.

Also if the larger spring above the ball of the shift lever breaks, it can lead to buzzing noises.

Or possibly your engine is about to throw a rod ...

I hope he knows your kidding. lol

I also had a weird buzzing on our GT6 shift lever. In our case it turned out to be the enameled/cloisonne disk on the aftermarket wooden shift knob we'd installed. We pried the decorative disk off and used RTV to re-attach it. No buzzing since.

The usual suspect is the ball or spring as suggested above. However, after I rebuilt my distributor I had a similar problem and it was caused by me messing up the engine timing. The engine was pinging (as you guys call it!) a bit, but the gear lever rattled a lot under acceleration. Now that the timing is fine there is no rattle.

Only partially ... as noted above, excess engine vibration sometimes shows up as the shift lever buzzing. Triumph had a lot of trouble with the lever buzzing on the 4-cylinder cars, but the 6 was supposed to be smoother ...

Many thanks for all of the great responses to my original post. It turns out the the buzzing sound was being caused by a very slightly loose gearshift knob. Once tightened up the problem went away.
