Vented cap on damper piston on top of BJ8 carbs.

Are the caps for the damper piston on top of the BJ8 carbs supposed to be vented or not and are they plastic or brass. Mine are not vented and are brass. I do not see a hole drilled into the boss on the dome to vent the top so I am guessing that the cap should be vented. Thanks and have a good day!

Hi John,
They should be the plastic vented one. Small hole off center.

My Phase 1 has vented brass caps.
Yep everything became cheaper as they headed for 1967

Mine were plastic and the thread had been stripped from one of them and it kept coming off so they were replaced with brass ones that are vented - slightly off-centre as AUSMHLY suggests.

They look far more pleasant.

Cept fer that thar wooden dash.

I second that thought. I installed the brass top units that don't strip out or worse, crack out under sever duty (aka vintage racing). They have an off-set breather hole in the top.

Per Concours Registry:

Dashpot caps: Up to and including early 29D series 6-cylinder engines, the dashpot caps were unfinished brass, hexagonal in shape. On later 29D series (after # 6395) and all later engines, the caps were black plastic with a "wavy" outer edge, and the part number stamped across the center (e.g. AUC 8103).

Yep Roger, but like Dougie said they still broke all to bits.---Keoke-

Interesting that the Concours Registry did not mention the air hole/vent in either the brass nor plastic.

I had a black cap blow from a "back fire". Shot the rod through the black plastic cap. I replaced both but carry a spare which happen to be brass(drilled). The black ones came from Moss with out the vent hole. Dave Russell said it must be vented if the dash-pot (dome) did not have the proper vent in that angle part at the top.

Re: Vented cap on damper piston on top of BJ8 carb

Either the caps are vented or
a hole has been drilled into the boss on the dome to provide the required venting.---Keoke
