The stiff wire shaft that operates my vent lid has a knee in it:

That seems unlikely and straightening it might allow the flap to be closed more securely -- but thought I would check before I either straighten it or break it.

Is that operating wire supposed to be straight or should it have that bend?
 
My car didn't have an operating wire when I got it. The hinges on the lid were rusted so it didn't open or close. I have a length of (ordinary) bicycle spoke as an operating rod, and it has been operating fine. It does not have a knee in it like yours does. "Threading" it thru the firewall would lead one to believe it should be curved, instead of straight, but otherwise, I'm not sure how a bend might be helpful. I'm inclined to think yours will break if you try to take the knee out.

It should be straight. It should bend back. In the event that it does break or not come out as good as you want I've got a spare that I'd let go pretty cheap.
