Vent hose, painted or not

Hi all.
I've attached a photo. It shows that I have painted the top crankcase vent hose engine color.

Does the botom elbow vent hose get painted engine color also. Currently it's black.

Also...what about the wire hose clips on those hoses. Should they be painted?

Thank you, Roger

Looking in the Anderson/Moment Healey Restoration Guide, page 155, although the photo is black & white, it appears to me that both the top vent hose and the bottom elbow as well as the vent pipe and clamps are all painted engine color. This would make sense since the engine was assembled with generator, starter, etc. and then painted. It is also my understanding that the copper pipe (heater to radiatior hose) is also painted engine color although most cars seem to have them unpainted.

Questions for all - anyone know of a source for the heater
vent 4 inch diameter flexible hose ? Other than the usual
high price sources such as Moss or VB. Thanks,
Mike ( big healey source)

Roger,

Your valve cover rivets may leak. These should be solid rivets.

Tracy

Bighly's right about the rivets. Those pop rivets may or may not leak, but they are definitely not what came from the factory. Any of your friends who may be building a kit airplane will be able to help with solid rivets.

Moss or Aircraft Spruce got em Cutlass. However, most of the original rivets in the valve covers leak!--Keoke

What a great bunch of guys. Answers my questiong and points out other areas I missed. Thanks bighly!

Paint the clips? I don't want to, they look great natural, but green I should if I've painted the rubber.

OK, just to make sure, the wire clips are painted green?

Well, frankly, I wouldn't paint the clips (hose clamps) either, but they did at the factory. Remember the whole engine and parts were assembled and then painted. I doubt they would put the hoses and vent pipe on, then paint, and then come back and put the clamps on. It is also my understanding that the fan belt was painted, as it was also on the engine fan and generator and got painted with them.

HI Mike,It appears that Moss is not stocking the shorter heater vent hose only the longer fresh air hose. You might try Sports & Classics, Healey Surgeons or Hemphill's Healey Haven. Get the best price and just go for it---Keoke

Good point Keoke. I solved this by slathering jb weld on the inside on the rivets and around the filler neck to stop them leaks. The rivet leaks were frustrating since the pumped oil under the Austin and Rocker plates so clean-up was never possible.

Another trick for Roger "since he is starting from a heck-a clean car" is to cover the hub side spoke ends on his rims with clear silicon sealant to stop the anti-sieze / brake dust from making its way onto the spokes (centrifical force feeding).

All them technical terms /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

Hi Roger, all would have been painted originally, however, over the years one would expect the hoses to have been replaced with the respective clips so no they don't have to be painted. Same goes for the return heater copper pipe, yes it was painted but with the high heat the paint would not stay on. If you're going to have a concours car, consult the guidelines.
Good luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Are solid rivets for the valve cover plates a detail on the judging sheet at concours events? BTW mine are solid! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yep David, Ask Sean Johnson about that.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Later BJ8's came without the metal plates on the valve cover, repalced with decals. Mine came with the matal plates, but were inappropriate. Problem was the valve cover with the holes. I didn't discover all this till after painting. Sooooo, a friend who is building a kit plane countersunk the holes, placed four flush fitting rivets, and we sealed the inside with aircraft fuel tank sealing compound called Pro-Seal (sometimes referred to as the "black death"). I suggested an airplane buddy not to find the rivets, but to gain access to the proper tools to set the rivets.

Yup. Getting the proper rivets is easy, BCS, Hemphills, AH Spares etc you pick your favorite. BUT setting them with out a tool is near impossible unless you use aluminium ones which are not correct, brass is correct. Believe me without one of them purpose made rivet setting tools all you will do is bugger up your rivets. This was one of my do over, and over, and overs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
