Valve/Rocker cover

Hello all. Replaced the 2 riveted plates on my valve cover and was wondering if there is a specific torque setting for the 2 bolts that secure the valve cover? 62 BT7 MKll. Thanks.

No, the valve cover is not really under pressure as you can run the engine with out the cover on. Any leaking can be stopped with a good gasket and sealer and the bolts are in rubber sleeves. Just firm secure to hold the gasket.

Ok thanks. My cover does not have the rubber sleeves. I ordered them, however they are shouldered and do not drop into the holes on my cover. When I bought the car it just had copper washers. Not sure why the rubber sleeves dont fit. Perhaps an older valve cover?

Am I missing something? As I just posted, my valve cover nuts only have copper washers under them. I ordered the rubber bushings/cup washers which were correct for my engine no. but I cannot figure out why they do not fit. Question- Are the shouldered rubber bushings supposed to drop into the holes in the valve cover? Then cap washers on top? The cover hole diameter is too small for me to drop the smaller part of the rubber bushing into the holes? I'm lost. Am I mounting them wrong? Or do I need to just use copper washers? Thanks.

Hi,

The rubber bushings should be pressed into the holes on the cover, then the cap washers go over the rubber bushings, the "cap nut" then snugs the cover down. The rubber bushings should stop any seepage or oil mist from getting blown out of the two openings and making a mess of your beautiful cover! You should be able to snug the bushings in, they may be the wrong size, but I doubt it.

I use RTV to secure a cork gasket to the cover. When the RTV is set, I can repeatedly remove the cover to adjust valves or, just check on things. There may be other ways, but an old time LBC mechanic showed me this technique and I'm happy with it.

Thanks Dave I appreciate your response. I brought the rubber bushings/sleeves to my healey mechanic and he knew right away they were the wrong ones. Fortunately he had a couple to give me that fit perfectly. They must have shipped me ones for another cover. The RTV sounds like a great idea. Thanks again.
