I am rebuilding a 1275 head and need an alternative to the conventional valve removal tool so I can compress the springs. Any ideas? Thanks
 
Do you have an arbor press or even a drill press? Notch a piece of pipe with an OD the same as the valve spring retainer so that there are 4 equally spaced points (think of a castle nut). Use this to push down on the retainer (in a press of some sort) and then remove the keepers with a magnetic pick up tool. It may help to put a piece of wood under the valve to keep it up in the chamber. It will be a balancing act but it is doable.
 
Like Chris said but with a combo wrench a socket as a folcrum and a nut under the valve, if you are strong enough it can be do it by hand, use a small screwdriver to get the retainers out.
 
Why do you need an alternative to a conventional compressor? If the answer is, "so you don't have to spend a bunch a $$ on a tool you will only use once," consider the following options.


Option 1: Go to Harbor Freight, buy a valve spring compressor for $6. It's not a very good one, but you won't be using it every day.

Option 2: Go to Autozone or equivalent retail auto parts store and see if they have a valve spring compressor in their lend lease program. It's free!
