howdy,
while driving my healy the other day out of the blue came a loud valve train rattle limped her home [3 mi] pulled rocker box found #4 intake way out of spec [.020 ] readjusted ran smooth quiet.upon road test rattle returned, rechecked lash [.012] pulled spark plug, fuel fouled. pulled valve keeper-springs[within height spec] rotated valve stem [seems concentric] i now suspect the valve seat came loose. also found some wear on the spring cap & base cup. looking in moss inventory, they do not list valve seat replacements, where do i find this piece if needed???

There are no valve seat replacements in the catalogs. Valve seats are something that we had our machine shops install in our cylinder heads, for the exhaust valves, after the government eliminated lead from our gasoline. If you think you need one, pull your head and take it to your local automotive machine shop.

Quick check, has your head been converted to unleaded, if so - you will have valve seats inserted.

Down to 5 cylinders firing ? chances are you have either burned out a valve or the insert has dropped out and is dangling on the head of the valve.

The only way of knowing for sure - unless you have a bore scope, is to remove the head. From the sounds of it, it will need to come off anyway.

You could check the compression if you have a meter.

How do I know, - I burnt out a valve so I took the opertunity to have the head converted to unleaded, then after 1 year dropped an insert. - ouch!!

Hi Daily

This rattle, do you know for sure it is in the top of the engine?

When you re-adjusted number 4 and then ran the engine, was it under load or did you just have it on tick over, did you rev it at standstill?

I am thinking now of little ends?

Bob

hi bob,
thanks for your input,
since "rattle" post, pulled the head, reposted "lookin for pistons" found busted ring land, with ring bits in crown.

Happened to me with an Austin mini engine many years ago, ran it for quite a time like that, with bits of ring comming up occassionally and beating itself into the head of the piston, eventually threw a second hand engine in for ÂŁ30. Those were the days.
