T-Series Valve gap for an MGTD 1953.

I have a 1953 MGTD that I have owned for 45 years. A few years ago I rebuilt the engine (with help from someone more knowledgeable) and had a problem with the head. It had a large crack in it forcing me to install a different head. The original head was for a newer MGTD with circular holes for antifreeze cooling. I was unable to find an identical head and the mechanic told me that an older head would work fine with the "banana-shaped" holes for cooling. Luckily I found a head on E-Bay and had it checked out by a shop that specializes in heads. The problem I am now facing is not knowing what "GAP" (lash) I need to set the valves. Should I set the valves at .012" or .019" ??????? .019" is for the older (banana hole) head up to engine 24115 and .012" is for the newer (circular hole) head after engine 24115. I obviously can't go by my engine number since the head is for an older engine.
Any suggestions are appreciated. I temporarily set them for .015" as a compromise.

.015 is fine! The valve train will be fairly quiet and no chance of burning a valve. PJ

Thanks for the update. Makes me more confident. They are a little noisy but better to be a little loose than too tight. My biggest concern was that "IF" they should be .019" and I set them .015" they might be tighter than they should and damage the valves. Drive Safe!

If you only drive around town or secondary roads at normal speeds, .012 shouldn't do any harm and they would be quieter. I have a Crane cam in my TF and Crane calls for .018 to .019. PJ

Thanks for your reply. I only drive around town and never go above 3500 RPM.
I also spoke to Tech support at Moss and he felt that .012" to .015" is perfect. (.012" being a little tighter than .015" but may add a little power)
He did mention (and I agree) that a little loose is better than tight.
He also mentioned that originally they MG recommended .019" but modified it to .012" after a few years to resolve some complaints about noisy lifters. (I don't mind noisy lifters..... the rest of my "noises" drowned out the lifters.... lol)
I have to check the gap again - I've lost a LITTLE power and possibly have a little wear going on for the tappets, valves, or push rods. Either I have to re-adjust or will try .012". That may bring back a little of the lost power. I also have to re-torque the head.
Thanks for everyone's reply. FORUMS ARE GREAT!!!!!!

I might add that an Italian tuneup might be helpful after you have established the gaps. No more than 3500 and in town makes for a sad MG.

and yes, forums are great!!!
