I asked this question in the MG forum but didn't get any replies so I'll try here.

I bought a used alloy valve cover that was listed as being off a '73 Midget. Well I got it the other day and it is about 3/4" wider and 2-1/4" longer than a 1275 Midget valve cover. Does anyone have the dimensions of an MGB valve cover / valve cover gasket to see if it fits a B? Thanks.

Not being that familiar with the "B"s, I cannot say for sure, but the larger dimensions would lead me to believe that it is for a "B" motor (how many other choices are there really?).

Did you get it off ebay? I am constantly amazed at what people list as being for Spridgets that come nowhere near close to looking correct!!! I always try to post a "telling" question to those listings! For e.g. there was a drive shaft with universals at BOTH ends for a listed Sprite and a 14" wire wheel for a Sprite or Midget!!! Caveat emptor.
 
I was thinking Volvo, but the MG logo was foolin' me....LOL Just kidding.

I have a B (1970) gasket, it measures 15 and an eigth" x 4 and three quarters"
Slightly (although I didn't measure the 1275) longer than the 1275.
Could it be a 1500?

If it is for a B and you need to find a new home for it, I'd be happy to help.
 
That's an aftermarket MGA/B valve cover.
 
Thanks for the info. It matches Barry's dimensions. Yes I got it off of E-scam, usually you can tell if something fits a spridget, but there was no reference point to tell size from on this one. The seller finally told me he got if off a junk yard car. Oh well, I liked the MG logo though.

When I got my midget, my husband found a set of "Midget MG centercaps" We asked if they were for our wheel size and all of the typical questions.....turns out they DO NOT FIT A Midget. Paid $20. I re-listed them (got $45) and let the seller know that they were NOT FOR A midget. Two weeks later she was listing another set...again mislabeled. Man e-scam is right sometimes. You have to be real careful about buying parts for these cars on e-bay. I have not had near the problem getting parts for 86 Supras or 87 300 Z cars like I have had with MG parts. Much of both I think. Also we LBC owners are suckers for that odd part that comes up, and I think some of those sellers "play" us. My rule of thumb is, if I'm not positive on what is being offered, just watch, don't buy!
I have seen SUCH JUNK go for ridiculous prices!!!
 
I buy a lot of parts on e-bay, and I will always have at least two catalogs open so I can check the price new, shape and variations on model years of things.
When it comes to size, that's different, depending on how far the camera is away from the object!
I've learnt to only buy from a few sellers now and even their new stuff is cheaper than the usual suspects.
 
You wouldn't beliive how many times I corrected people on Ebay about what they are selling. Most of the time they are glad you told them, because they don't have a glue it was just something sitting aroung grandpa's shop, other times I get know-it-all that sends back hate mail, in that case if it grabs my goat I email the bidders to let them know. Here's a little tip on future alloy valve cover searchs, most A-series alloy valve covers do not have a MG crest on them so they can sell them to Sprite or Midget buyers. clean that thing up real good and re-list it, chances are you'll make a profit and get into the a MGB owners hand, in fact, I would put this post up on the MG site ad you might get a bite and someoen who will take it off your hands.
